┣Kiki's POV┫
I make my way to the building where my job interview is located as I adjust my lilac dress and my red and gold pendant given to me by my past lover. I keep my head held high and remember why I need this job. I need it for myself. I need it for the animals. For my daughter.
I take a deep breath and walk into the window-filled skyscraper, knowing I have to go to the 36th floor to conference room #1027. I look around at all of the unique individuals, all of them talking and eating a late breakfast. Many of them work on laptops in clusters, talking about future ideas for the new Mango Phone Company "MPhone7". I smile at the thought as I feel around for my own Mango Phone. I pull out my peach phone and begin to pass the time playing games as I walk, so I blend in like any regular employee.
I become directed toward the elevator where no one is standing. Nobody else was inside, and I immediately feel at ease. The door closes as I watch the numbers beep, going from F1 to 2 and 3, and so on. I eventually ignore it until it reaches floor 5, where it stops abruptly and the glass doors begin to slide open. I slip and fall as the doors open, showing someone I never would wish to see again.
Black hair and the lone blue eye shines into my soul, helping my delicate body off the ground. I dare not look at him as he retreats to the opposite corner of the elevator. I brush the dirt off of my dress and look out the window to my side. I shoot a small glance to him. He looks over to me and the memories flood back.
I begin to tear up and look back down at my phone. I decide to text my friend, Aphmau, to ask what I should do in this situation. She doesn't respond as I angrily turn my phone off. What I do not notice is the flashing red light near the number keypad, blinking at a rapid pace. As I decide to ignore the light, the buzzer turns on, the elevator coming to an abrupt stop. I stumble into my corner again, my back pressed against the wall from the sudden change. It stops dead in its tracks as a pre-recorded message rings in my ear.
"Warning: Stay put, help is on the way. Warning: Stay put, help is on the way." It repeats, slowly dying down to a whisper. I look at Zane with worried eyes as he slowly mumbles to himself. I ignore him and notice the time.
"Crap!" We both yell, ignoring the other and our repeated action. "I'm going to be late to the--"
"Interview!" We exclaim at the same time. We look at each other as my brain processes what just happened. We stand in silence, unable to talk to the other person. Zane begins to speak.
"I- I know it's you Kiki." He gulps, adjusting his black bow tie around his neck. "I never would expect you to be the interviewee." I look away and slightly nod so he notices I have heard. I blush a light pink, and decide I cannot stand the silence on top of the warning signal.
"I'm sorry Zane. I didn't mean to get pregnant with your child. It's my fault." I whisper, tears in my eyes as I know I am lying to myself. I did NOTHING. He left...He did this to me... He should--
"No." He speaks. "I should be. I left, I do bad deeds that I am not proud of. But one thing that I should have done is stayed to support you and..." He trails off, as I have not seen or talked to him since I broke the news. Since we broke up.
"L-Leona." I murmur, smiling at her beautiful name. "She's happy and healthy. Her five year old self is just full of enthusiasm."
I re-open my phone and show him a photo. His lone pupil wells up with water as he examines her. He scrolls through all of my photos, starting from when she was born. He tears up but quickly wipes everything away.
"S-She's absolutely beautiful." He beams, returning my phone. I nod. We stare into each other's eye(s), his face burning up. But then, he turns away.
"I-I'm sorry Kiki." He says, stuttering. I look at him with concern as he continues. "But... I'm already married."
My heart breaks. A violent gasp escapes my lungs. I drop my phone and hear the screen shatter into a million pieces. I grab the phone, wishing I didn't begin talking to him in the first place. He looks out of the glass elevator into the city as I mimic him with the opposite side.
After what seems like forever, I begin to speak, remembering there are more people in the world, and I am over him completely.
"Who are you..." I gulp. "Married... To?"
"Lillian." He says, as I remember the face from when we worked together. When I was pregnant, we worked together at a clothing store called 16Forever. I remember her mentioning Zane as family friends, but I never imagined them getting married after I quit.
"We... Have a son." He says, looking onto his phone. I immediately notice his background; Zane is with a little boy with blonde hair and blue eyes, as their genes correspond with the child.
An older Lillian stands next to him, he stomach looking more expanded than usual. She's pregnant. I think, somehow smiling at the thought. I remember her telling me she wanted a son and a daughter, which I hope they receive.
After I examine the image, Zane and I smile and the door prys open to show a multitude of people. We exit the elevator as we walk the remaining stairs to the conference room. I nail the interview, feeling more confident with Zane in the room. Even though I am over Zane, I'm happy for him.
The next day, I received a letter and package from the Mango Phone Company with an MPhone7 (which hasn't come out yet!) and a letter saying that I got the job. Since they felt bad about the phone, they sent me the final phone to test with a red and black case. I dance around the apartment with Leona, both of us laughing in glee.
This may not be such a bad job after all...
Hope you enjoyed that thing! Much Love, Riley <3
