Aphmau sat in the wooden rocking chair, tilting it back and forth and cradling the small child, it's crying dwindling down but still wide eyed.
"Trystan...Shhh...." Aphmau cooed, a smile brightening her face, "Mommy wants you to sleep now." The baby looked up a her, confused as to what she just said, causing the new mother to silently giggle. Aphmau smirked, "Well... I guess I can sing you a lullaby... If that is what it takes..."
Aphmau cleared her throat before singing, her caramel eyes looking into her son's green ones, something he inherited from his father.
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles await you when you rise.
Sleep, Pretty baby,
Do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.
Cares you know not,
Therefore sleep,
While over you a watch I'll keep.
Sleep, Pretty darling,
Do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.
As Aphmau stared at her now asleep son, she glared up to see her husband waiting at the door frame, watching the special moment as always between his wife and son.
Laurance entered after Aphmau placed their child in the crib, his body cozy and mouth ajar and drooling. Laurance placed a kiss on his wife, pulling her into an embrace.
"Hey Aph." Laurance whispered under his breath.
Aphmau responded with a simple, "Hello my love."
They exited the room and walked down the spiral staircase, their arms connected as they entered into the living room where they cuddled on the couch through the night, no crying to be heard from above.
Everyday was like this. Perfect house, perfect job, perfect family. Perfect.
Until the fateful day that everything came crashing down.
Aphmau was driving across the freeway, her son still at his Grandmother's house not too far away from Laurance and Aphmau.
She was jamming along to some songs as usual, her eyes glued to the road when out of nowhere, a car slammed into her side, pushing her off the road and tumbling down a deep ditch, the windows shattering and her voice screaming for help.
A large chunk of glass lodged into her spleen, creating what was later identified as a rupture. She died within minutes, the car being found roughly four hours after the accident.
The whole family was devastated that such a young, empowering woman passed at the age of 25, but Laurance was the one hit with the most grief.
His job went downhill, his mind wandering at times and unable to sleep the nights before, his health depleted, not wanting to consume any food at times, and his life was devoted to Trystan, the last part of Aphmau alive on this planet.
As his black whisps of hair didn't add to the struggle of getting over Aphmau, he couldn't for the life of him, put his baby to sleep.
He tried rocking, burping, feeding, a pacifier, everything you could ever imagine, but everything ended in the child either bursting into tears, which triggered a rainstorm from Laurance, or the bright wide eyed child that wasn't ready for this thing called "sleep".
One night as Laurance was trying the feeding method, his memory sparked.
A lullaby he thought, hustling around to place the bottle down, Hopefully this works... I'm not a very talented singer like Aphmau was...
He cleared his voice, attempting to sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Brahms Lullaby" with no such luck. He tried to think of any other lullabies that Aphmau used to sing, remembering the one about Golden Slumbers.
"Let's try this one more time." He muttered to the baby who only laid against his father, waiting for what was in store.
{Cue Music}

{Stop at 1:02}
Even though Laurance messed up a few notes, the child went to sleep, his eyes shutting tight. Laurance's eyes pooled with tears as he brushed them away quickly, remembering his wife's angelic voice while singing the song. The father made small a mental note for the future and internally praised himself, placing his son down to sleep as his tear stained cheeks shimmered in the moonlight.
"Goodnight, Trystan. Goodnight."
