Chapter 38
Mia's POV
Avery hadn't been to school on Thursday or yesterday, so when I see her tonight at the party my friend invited me to, I'm shocked and for a couple reasons. Firstly, I was shocked to see her here, but most of all I'm just shocked to see her. I love how laidback Avery dresses, I don't think I've ever seen anybody look better in jeans then she does, but when I saw her earlier tonight I had to do a double take.
First to make sure the woman sitting at the table was actually her, and then to take in how absolutely stunning she looks. She doesn't look any more beautiful then she usually does, I don't even think that's possible to begin with. It's just her beauty is so much more obvious right now. I was surprised she was sitting at a table alone and on her phone when she could, I'm sure quite literally, get anyone in the room with a snap of her fingers. I've never seen Avery wear anything other than jeans, and as much as I love them on her, I got to say I also love seeing her in that dress, she looks absolutely radiant.
After I finished marveling in her beauty, I called out her name and she seemed just as surprised to see me as I was her. After I got her to stop checking me out, I noticed that it seemed as if she wasn't as happy to see me as I was her. But seeing as I've been trying to get her talk to me for about a month now, I wasn't going to let that stop me. I actually managed to succeed in getting her to somewhat talk to me, at least until everything went to shit.
It seems as if everyone is deliberately trying to antagonize Avery tonight, and it's pissing me off as well. When her half-brother said those awful things to her, all I wanted to do was punch him, and I might have if Avery weren't so good at defending herself.
While she may have been able to put that asshole in his place, I couldn't help but notice how incredibly angry she got. I've never seen Avery that angry before, I've seen her yell at her friends before, but she was only pissed off, and it was absolutely nothing compared to what I had seen. Avery wasn't just angry, she was completely enraged. It truly scared me, not for myself, but for her.
The Avery I've come to know has never acted like that. Yes she could get annoyed or pissed off quite a bit, but never like that. This Avery looked like she was more than willing to make good on her threats, and it completely scares the crap out of me that someone can actually get that reaction out of her. It scares me that someone would deliberately do that to her. And it absolutely terrifies me that she says her father is much worse. These people are her family, they should not be treating her like this. These are supposed to be the people protecting her from getting hurt and not the ones hurting her.
"You're real good you know that!" I hear someone say and turn to see Nick and he looks rather annoyed. "You seriously had me. You should be an actress or something!" he says to Avery and I'm suddenly really confused.
"What are you talking about Nick?" I ask.
"I'm talking about your friend here. She's an excellent liar you know!" he says and I turn to look at Avery, who just closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. "I actually believed you, you really should win an Oscar or something. You seriously had me looking everywhere for someone who doesn't even exist. Bravo!"
"What makes you think that she lied to you?" I ask, still confused.
"Well when I couldn't find my boss' daughter in any of the places your friend told me to look, I started asking around again. Eventually I got to someone who said that the girl I was looking for was causing a rather big commotion in the far corner of the ballroom. And look where I am!" he says.
