Chapter 55

I'm not sure for how long I was sitting inside my car outside Mia's apartment, but when it finally started to get dark I decided it was time to leave. I didn't want to go home right away so I just drove around for a while in a failed attempt to calm myself and clear my head. When I finally do get home it's already well after seven.

"Hey!" I hear Shannon call from the couch when I enter the apartment.

"Hey," I call back and she turns around to look at me.

"You look like hell!" she says and I roll my eyes. "Liam is probably still waiting for you to say goodnight to him," she says and I nod my head and drop my keys on the counter before heading to his room.

I quietly slip into his room and see that he's already sound asleep. I just stand next to his bed for a second and smile at how cute he looks. He's already gotten so big. I honestly can't believe he's already six years old. After a minute, I lean down and lightly kiss his forehead, trying not to wake him, but I don't seem to do a very good job.

"Mommy?" he yawns and I smile again.

"Sorry I woke you little man," I whisper. "I just wanted to say good night."

"I love you mommy," he whispers and my smile grows.

"I love you too honey. Go back to sleep, okay?" I say and he nods his little head and my smile grows once again. I kiss his forehead one more time and watch as he curls back up under the covers before I slip back out of his room.

The second his bedroom door quietly closes behind me, my smile vanishes. With a sigh I make my way down the hall and to the kitchen. I open the fridge and grab a beer and the second I turn around I see Shannon standing right behind me, causing me to jump a little.

"You scared the shit out of me!" I hiss quietly, but I know she doesn't care.

"So, what happened at Mia's?" she asks as she leans back against the counter. I sigh and take a sip of my beer before answering her.

"It's over," I tell her and she just looks at me for a second.

"It's over? Like you guys are done?" she asks to clarify and I nod my head. "What the hell, Avery?"

"She wants out, so it's over," I say with a shrug of my shoulders and she gawks at me.

"Don't you try to play this off like it's no big deal, Avery! I know you love her and want to be with her. And I sure as hell know you don't want to lose her, so why are you letting this happen?"

"I'm letting this happen because it's what's best for her! I can't give her what she really wants. And to keep going on like we were, causing her that pain, it was incredibly selfish of me. No, I don't want to lose her, but that doesn't mean I can have her."

"You can have her, Avery! All you have to do is let her in. She really wants to be with you, so let her!" she says and I sigh and put down my beer.

"I'm not going to do that to her just so I can be with her! If she actually becomes a part of my like it will only hurt her and I can't do that to her. Doing that would be even more selfish than what I already have done."

"Fuck, Avery! You don't honestly know if any of that is true. Yes, it could be, but you don't know. And even if it were, it's clear she can handle much more than you give her credit for. She wants to be with you, and being with her wouldn't be selfish. Avery, you are literally one of the least selfish people I know," she finishes softly.

I sigh and look at her sadly. "You're wrong! All I ever am is selfish. Everything I ever put you and Evan through, everything you've ever done for me just proves that. I have hurt you both so much, and I'm not doing that to Mia too!"
