Chapter 61
Mia's POV
I zip up my dress and fix my hair before walking out of Avery's bathroom and into her room.
Tonight's the night of the party and I'm a little nervous. We have been having such a good week here in New York that I kind of forgot the party was the whole reason we were here to begin with.
Avery took me all over the city and showed me all the sights and her favorite places to go and eat. We spent some time by the pool in her basement. Yeah, she has a fucking pool in her basement. I couldn't convince her not to wear shorts in the pool, she was too self-conscious about the scars on the back of her legs no matter how many times I told her not to be. But other than that we have been having a great time here, and now it's time for the 'grand' event and I couldn't be more nervous.
"My god you look amazing," she says as I enter the room wearing a white long sleeved backless gown. When my eyes take her in I'm at a loss for words. She is wearing a fairly simple strapless black gown and as usual she will always be the most beautiful person in the room.
"Not as amazing as you," I say as I walk towards her slowly. She puts a hand up to stop me and I look at her with a raised brow.
"You'll mess up my hair," she says and I laugh.
"Really? Are you really saying I can't touch you because I will mess up your hair?" I ask and she nods.
"That's exactly what I'm saying."
"Okay," I say with a small laugh and she smiles at me.
"Okay, we need to talk about how you want me to introduce you at this thing."
"What do you mean?" I ask, not quite understanding what she is talking about.
"I mean do you want me to introduce you as my girlfriend?" she asks and I look at her with a raised brow.
"Avery, you are my girlfriend. Why wouldn't I want you to introduce me as such?" I ask and she shrugs her shoulders.
"It's just that it would be a lot easier for you if I were to introduce you as my friend. The people that are going to be at this party are polite assholes. They hate and despise everyone. And while they may never actually say that or whatever else they want, they do make their opinion of you very clear. And if I introduce you as my girlfriend it will only be that much worse on you," she says and I start to understand. I walk up to her and she watches me carefully as I gently grab her hips.
"Avery, I don't give two shits what those people think or have to say about me. The only reason I'm here is for you. So, if you don't want to introduce me as your girlfriend, then I'll understand," I say as I look into her eyes and she frowns.
"That's not what I meant at all! I would love to introduce you as my girlfriend. It's just that some of these people are truly awful. And I'm worried about what some of them may say to you," she says with a worried look on her face.
"Avery, I'm a big girl. I can take it and I really don't care what those people have to say about me."
"So, you want me to introduce you as my girlfriend?" she asks as her mood starts to pick up.
"If that's what you want."
"It is," she says and I smile brightly.
"Good, I'm glad! Because I worked to damn hard to earn that title and I want to brag about it to as many people as I can," I say and she laughs.
