In the kitchen I began to get out cups and the likes, clattering around deliberately. I hoped Barty would start striking up a conversation about.... I didn't wanna know.
"Sugar?"
"Yes honey!?" She giggled, hiccuping.
I sighed and dumped two sugars in each cup. Then coffee granules. Then water. Then milk.
"Make mine black!"
Dangit.
I chucked one coffee down the sink and remade it. Then I grabbed one in each hand, secretly dropping a sleeping tablet in Cassandra's. She'd need it. I walked into the living room and passed her a cup. Barty was at her feet and I swear he winked at me as I sat opposite her.
"Shoo cat!" I hissed, knocking him with my foot. Cassandra gasped and bundled him into her lap.
"Why did you do that to Blacky?" She said, hurt.
'Blacky' looked at me smugly.
Cassandra set her coffee down on the table and looked me in the eye.
"So," she looked at me, "What stuff did you wanna talk about?"
"Ok. I know we've been yelling A LOT at each other recently, and I just wanted to say--"
"Forget it!" She giggled, sipping her coffee, "We hate me-- you-- uh... hic!"
"Right. Relax Cassie..."
"Hey..." she said, drowsily, "You called me Cassie..."
"Yeah, do you like that better?"
"No. Call me Cassandra..." Then she fell asleep.
Huh.
I shoved Barty away and put her legs up on the sofa, covering her with a throw at the same time. Then I set up camp on the armchair, and I fell asleep to the sound of her snoring. And Barty trying to kill her feet.
