I banged on the wall by the bookcase for hours, and hours, and hours. My hand was getting sore, but I continued pounding my fist into cold metal. Time seemed to tick away as slow as treacle runs down a stack of pancakes. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. BANG BANG BANG BANG!

"Jeesh dude. Face it. She's not gonna open the door. Just leave her be." Barty sighed, playing with a bit of fluff on the floor.

"No! I will not leave her be. OPEN UP YOU CRAZY VAMPIRE LADY!" I yelled, knocking again.

"Oh snap! You got her there buddy!" Barty laughed, sarcastically.

I kicked the wall, and winced as my toe hit the metal. I went and poured myself a cup of blood to strengthen me, and I guped it down. Then resumed the knocking and pounding and kicking.

"Please! PLEASE! I just want a way out of here!" I felt my anger ebb away a little,  "Just...a way out. Please. I'll supply you with a blood cooler! I have one ready!"

The bookcase shifted a little, and one half of Mirabel's face became visible.

"Do you swear?" She whispered.

"Uh... yes?" I whispered back.

"Why are you whispering?" Barty whispered. We ignored him.

"On the cats life?" She pointed to Barty.

Barty let out an indignant meow. We ignored him.

"Yes. On the cat's life."

The bookcase slid aside, and Mirabel strode to the blood dispenser, picking it up and dragging it into her room. Then she grabbed my arm and dragged me to a corner in the metal room. As we stood looking at it, I realised what she wanted me to notice- a bolt. Right in the centre of the sheet of metal. How had I missed it before? Hesitantly, I scooped Barty up, and pressed it. And immediately we were thrown about a mile or so in the air (even though the room could have only been 8 or 9 feet tall), and we landed, with a thump, under the tree by my house.

"Whoooaaaaah. The last time I did that, it involved I lot less vampires, and a whole lot of catnip." Barty murmered, struggling to stand.

I ignored him.
