I checked my watch. Half past ten. She should be awake, right? I left Barty to his possum and ran to Cassandra's house, as fast as I could. Which was pretty fast. Then I weighed my options, and decided to climb the wall to her window again. If it worked once...

I scampered up the bricks, and when I reached her window, very quietly, I knocked.

"AAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!" Cassandra screamed, the window open.

"Shhhh! Shhhhh! Cassandra, it's me!" I said, covering her mouth as I climbed in, "Lucas? It's me!"

She mumbled something against my hand, then went limp. I checked. She'd fainted.

I lay her down on the bed and knelt besides her.

Of course.

She didn't remember me.

I put my lips to her ear and whispered, "Cassandra? It's Lucas. I know you don't remember me, but you have to listen. You and me... we were... we were friends. Good friends. But I'm a vampire, so you hated me, but then you loved me, and everything was messed up. Your parents died when you crashed a car, but you lost almost all your memory of the accident and all the incidents before. You were ambushed by another vampire, who bit you. The antidote to the venom buried even more of your memory. Thats why you don't remember me. Please, wake up. Please believe me. Please."

I knew it was a long shot. But I had to try.

Cassandra stirred in her sleep. Opened one eye. Then another.

Then she woke up, looked me in the eye, and hit me.
