"So how is it?" Stefan asked. Elena laughed.
"This is only my second day, Stefan!" She fiddled around with her phone. Everything reminded her of Damon. Especially Stefan because Stefan was Damon's brother. He. Still. Is. She collapsed onto her bed, still holding onto the phone.
"I know, I know... so when you going to come visit?" Elena got irritated again.
"STE-FAN I LE-FT YES-TER-DAY!" She said slowly, trying to calm down the fire building inside of her. Not because of Stefan, Stefan was just unlucky to be talking to her right now. She is going to explode. She feels like... she feels like she hasn't let out anything at all. No emotion. Yet she has been crying a river everyday since the day Damon died.
"I know! Fine I'll just have to come visit then..." Stefan taunted. Elena screamed in frustration, then hung up. Just then, Meredith walked into the room looking concerned.
"Is something wrong?"
"No! No... I just..." Elena trailed off looking for an excuse. She didn't need one. Meredith knew what was wrong, though, because the same thing has been wrong this whole time. Damon's gone. Elena had a quick cover up. Her stomach growled and she felt a sharp pain.
"When was the last time that I ate?" Elena asked Meredith, not expecting an answer.
"Well... Bonnie and her precognition stopped us from eating those juicy burgers!" Meredith reminded her. Elena jumped up and threw on a light sweater.
"Oh yeah! Okay I'll be back... I'm going out!" Elena rushed out of her dorm and ran out of the residence hall, then outside, desperate for fresh air... and food. She ran to one of the food stands, not caring what type of food she ate right now. She just wanted food. She bumped into someone.
"Sorry..." Elena mumbled, stepping back. She was standing in front of Stefan.
"STEFAN?" He grinned. She threw her arms around him, then stepped back, not believing her eyes.
"Told you that I would come!" She walked past him, expecting him to follow. He did. She realized that she was in line for vegetarian food.
"Changing your diet?" Stefan asked. She shook her head and headed back toward her dorm. He grabbed her arm, stopping her.
"Why don't you grab a hotdog? I want to take a walk with you. I know that you're desperate for fresh air..." after nights of crying. He didn't finish, but she already knew the last unspoken words.
"Fine." She waited for a half an hour before getting her food: a steaming, fat hotdog with cold coca cola. She started walking with Stefan at her side. She sipped her drink.
"So... after not even two days, you think I'm dead? Why'd you come?" Elena asked, walking down a path that she'd never taken before. He shook his head, smiling.
"Not at all... I miss you." Elena couldn't look at him, she stared straight ahead. In the corner of her eye, she saw his expression: serious and sad. She sighed and they found themselves on a bridge after forty-five minutes of walking. She stopped, tossing her garbage in the trash. They both stayed silent, looking at the view.
"I miss you, too..." Elena said after a while. He started leaning in toward her.
"But I miss Damon, too..." Elena let her voice trail off. Stefan backed away. Elena felt a warm, salty tear spill down her cheek. Stefan lifted his hand and wiped it. Then, he leaned in, taking in deep breaths of her flowery scent. Elena leaned away.
"I'm sorry, Stefan... this... this doesn't feel right..." Stefan cupped her face with his hands, forcing her to look at him.
"Elena... nothing feels right anymore. But trust me when I say that this is the only thing that does." Then he softly kissed her. She got lost in the moment only for a second, then remembered the painful memory of Damon... little Damon telling her that he loved her and asking her if she loved him. Speaking to Damon himself... while he was lost from his body forever. He told her to promise... to promise that she'd never forget him. How could she? She pushed Stefan away and looked around, not knowing where to go. Then she ran.
