I stared down at the million scrawled images of Eunji. If I had thought these two were hopeless before...wow. Jin was in love, for real. Also...a pretty damn good artist?!
"Jin...Kim Seok Friggin Jin," I said, bending down to pick up one of the best shaded, nearly three dimensional portraits, "You...are very good at this. And you have a problem."
He hurriedly scooped all the pictures together and attempted to stuff them into his bag, turning tomato red from his face to his ears and down his neck.
"I-I can explain. Uh- just- don't tell Eunji, please don't tell her about this!" He stammered. I shook my head as he snatched the picture from my and and shakily stood up.
"Jin, a good friend doesn't tell secrets but given the situation I think this only makes sense. I'm going to say this one time: I don't know how stupid you have to be to not see that Eunji is in love with you, but as her best friend I can 100% positively confirm that she is. Ask her out you frumpy walrus."
He stared at me confusedly. "Frumpy walrus?"
"It was all I could think of at the time. Anyway, it doesn't matter! Listen to the important part!!"
"But...even if she does like me, isn't it wrong to date her? I mean...Look at her. She has plans. She's talented...I...I don't even plan on becoming an artist, and I don't have anything to go on. I'm a repeat student who's a nudge away from failing. I don't have a future." I sighed.
"Then make one, you idiot! You don't have to be anything, she cares about you and you care about her and that's all that matters. If you stay together after high school then you'll both have to work. If you ever decide you need to be a better man then be one. Do what it takes. But for right now, save all of us the stupid trouble and date her!" I advised. Slowly, he nodded, staring at the ground.
"I need to figure out how. Eunji deserves a proper confession." We started walking quickly so as to catch up with the others before they noticed how long we were gone.
"Just show her one of those pictures and tell her. That should do it. Her mom's an artist, she loves art." I replied. He pulled a determined expression.
"You're right. There's one at home I've been working on. It's special. I can give her that one to finally show her how I see her. As soon as it's finished." I sighed as we entered the lunchroom, quickly spotting our ramshackle pack.
"Whimsy-ah," Yoongi called to me, gesturing towards a newly opened seat beside him. It was generally filled by Jin or Jimin, but today the seating arrangement had been adjusted to fit me, Eunji, and even Soomin. Looked like the days of being secretly involved reject girls were over. The school would have to acknowledge our coveted-yet-dangerous positions. I had to wonder, did people see us as gang bitches now? I looked down at myself.
Definitely not.
"Yah, were you listening in class today? I wasn't, but Rapmon said there is a partner assignment. Will you be my partner? You promised to help me do well in school," Yoongi pleaded, pouting with large docile, puppy dog eyes. I may have looked like a function human at that point, but I was actually a puddle.
"Of course...but I'm not doing all the work. You're going to do your part or I'm going to dump you and do it with Eunji." I assured him, strictly establishing our ultimatum. He frowned.
"I can't believe your opinion of me. It's like you think I'm a lazy guy who sleeps through all his classes!" He gasped, feigning insult. I slapped him playfully and he smiled in the way that only Yoongi can- that gummy, sweet, yet sassy smirk-grin of his, one eyebrow cocked in a slightly daring manner with his eyes full of mischief and fire.
God, he was a work of art. A complete mess, wrought with pain, demons, and troubled past, but there was more than enough to be salvaged. He was trying to become a better person, and I believed he could. That gem that he was past the rough exterior was someone I wanted to get to know badly.
"It's a presentation on a time in Korean history, right? You want to come over to my house tonight and start working on it?" I asked, cocking my head slightly.
"Perfect. I should meet your mom anyway, right?" He replied calmly.
"M-meet my mom?" I blurted.
"Yeah, I've already met your dad, and since we're dating now," He responded, dead serious.
I my cheeks flushed hot, and I could tell I wasn't the only one surprised at the table.
"Oh...we're...dating?" I questioned. He blinked back and his eyebrows furrowed.
"Oh, aren't we? I thought I made that clear before..." He scratched his chin as if to replay the events of the weekend and find an answer in his mind. "Do you not want to? Is it too fast?"
"No!" I exclaimed, immediately regretting my over-excited response. "I mean...sure, no that's totally fine, I just didn't realize." I rationalized, tucking a hair behind my ear oh-so-gracefully, as if to regain some semblance of composure.
Yoongi tucked the rest of my hair behind the ear and then squeezed my chin playfully, returning to his know-it-all playboy expression with an added sassy lip bite.
"You're cute. I'm fond of you too. It's rough for people like us." I blushed again, unsure of how to respond. The others around us shared knowing glances and Eunji even nudged me encouragingly.
"Well I guess it's official." Soomin appeared, placing her tray down beside Taehyung as she sat and laced arms with him. "For most of us anyway."
We all turned our eyes to Jin and Eunji.
Soon.
