Getting personal (a castle fanfic)

Back to work

Kate woke up the next morning feeling both excitement and dread. She wanted to go back to work so bad, but the only reason she was going back to work was to find the last victim of the serial killer, James Rayson. Well she hoped it would be his last. She had been awake for hours and after tossing and turning, she decided to take a shower before she woke Rick up. By the time Rick had got up, she had been awake for 4 hours, showered, dressed, eaten and was now sat on the sofa talking to her baby, a cup of decaff coffee sat on her bump. It was 8:15 and she was ready to go back to work but couldn't leave without Rick. 'Kate, how long have you been up? You should have woken me.' Rick said, sleepily walking to the counter, he was dressed which was a relief to Kate. 'A few hours now, I just want to get back to the precinct so we can get back to normality.' Rick walked over to Kate with 2 coffees in travel mugs and kissed Kate on the head. 'We will. Do you want to go now? I'm driving' he said as he handed the coffee to her. 'Sure, are you okay Rick? I know you don't like this but we haven't spoken about it since last night.' she enquired, placing her shoes and jacket on. 'Kate I'm fine, I don't like you doing this and I think we need to set some ground rules okay? Just for peace of mind more than anything.' They had reached the car, Rick holding the door open as Kate climbed in. This gave her a moment to think, she knew that he wouldn't talk to her and would be angry if they didn't set some kind of rule but she was New York's finest, she could handle things.

The car ride was fairly quiet. Kate had decided she didn't want to bring it up with him yet, she wanted to speak to Gates first. She understood where Castle was coming from, she was 3 months pregnant, not long since come out of hospital for being shot and being targeted by a serial killer who couldn't go to trial as there was a body to be found. All this stress wasn't good but, the only way to stop this stress was to finish this case which couldn't be done without her. They pulled into the precinct carpark and rode the elevator to the homicide floor. Kate didn't get then celebration most do after they return from work-related leave but she had made Gates promise that she would keep it to herself until she had made her final decision. She made her way straight to the break room, stopping by and saying hi to the boys first so that they knew she was here and so that Gates knew she was here. Rick went straight to the break room to get a drink. Kate entered, shut the door then stood in the door way. 'Rick, Rick please listen to me. I agree with you. There should be some rules. Some rules to relax you and to protect your baby. I can protect myself, I will do this but if something happened to your baby, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. So, if you want to set some rules, go ahead. I will do everything I can to follow them okay?' Castle hadn't turned around the whole time she had been talking, he had been thinking. She had referred to their baby as his. He took a deep breath before turning round, walking over to Kate and guiding her to sit down on the sofa. 'Kate, I don't want to feel like I'm forcing you into these for my sake. I want to protect both of you and I cannot do that out in the field without a gun. I love you, I love you both and I wouldn't be able to survive without you. I want to protect you and our baby. So I only have 1 rule when you go out in the field, or visit the creep that has been threatening my family... you cannot leave the precinct without one of the boys. You have to stay with one of them, not deserting or begging me to come instead. It has to be either Espo or Ryan. They have a gun. They can protect you better than I can out there.' Tears were running down Kate's face. She hadn't realised how serious Rick was about this, how much this was actually hurting him. 'I promise Rick. I promise' she rested her head against his, looking into his eyes.

They were interrupted by a knock at the door, Ryan. 'Erm, Beckett, Gates wants to see you. In her office.' 'Okay, thanks Ryan.' She gave Rick a quick kiss before standing up, wiping her eyes and heading to Gates office.
