Chapter 44

Lin's POV

"V, that dude can't come back. He hit Jessie. No, just no." I tell Vanessa when I sit on the couch. "Can't we get a restraining order?"

"Hun, the last time he hit Jessie was 8 years ago. It doesn't work like that." She tells me.

"Why did he even call himself her step-dad? Her real mom is dead, and he was never legally her guardian. It just bugs me."

"I know it bothers me too. How about we go to bed and we'll talk to Jessie about it." Vanessa suggests and I nod.

Jessie's POV

Dream:

I was in a bedroom. Not the one at Lin's or at the orphanage. My old room? My old teddy bear, Steven, was in front of me.

"Damn it, Christine! That bitch of yours touched my fucking computer!" Walter screamed.

"Walter! I bought that computer for all of us to use! And don't fucking call my daughter a bitch! She has a name!" My mother yelled.

"Christine, it's me or her, who is it?" Walter asked sternly.

"I choose my daughter! I've seen you fucking hit her! You've hit me, and I tired of it!" My mom is interrupted by a knock at the door. "I'll get it."

"Hello, Ms. Andrews. We're here for Jessie." A man asked.

"What? Why do you want my daughter? Who are you?"

"We work for child services. We got a call from your school. Reported abuse."

"No, you can't take her. She's the only thing that's keeping me alive! Please!" My mom begs.

"I'm sorry ma'am. Mr. Roberts, you're under arrest."

"No! That fucking kid has ruined my life!" Walter yells.

"Mommy?" I call. The man walks in.

"Hi sweetie. Can you come out her please?" The man asks, in a calmer tone.

I nod and follow him. "Jessie!" My mom yells and gives me a hug. "I love you so, so much. I'll come get you as soon as I can okay?" My mom says, enveloping me into a hug.

"Ms. Anderson, Jessie cannot return to this household."

"What? Wait, let me get her something." My mom says rushing to my room. She comes out with Steven a few minutes later. "When you're a teen, open the zipper. Okay?" She tells me and I nod.

I walk out with the man and get into the car when I hear a gun shot.

-End of dream-

I wake up sweating. I look around my room and try to find Steven. I forgot about opening the zipper, I've never tried.

I turn on my phone's flashlight to open Steven. "What is this?" I ask myself, unfolding a paper.

Jessie, I'm sorry if this is rushed, as you may know you were taken away. I was planning to give you this locket on Christmas but I might as well give it to you now. It's a picture of me and your father. He loved you so much. And I do too. Whatever happens, know that. Remember that. I hope whoever you go to I hope you are loved. I'm sorry for Walter hitting you, but he was our only hope of survival. I hope you forgive me. I love you, Mom.

I quietly sob to myself and check the time, 5:45 am. I open the locket and stared at the pictures of my parents. "I miss you." I cry.

Lin's POV

At around 5:00 I hear Jessie crying.

"Jessie?" I whisper as I open her door. I see her staring at something. "Jessie." I say louder and she looks up at me.

She hides what she's looking at. "Oh, good morning. Why are you up?"

"I heard you crying. What were you looking at?" I ask walking to her bed.

"Oh! Um nothing. Just my phone." She lies.

"Jessie, tell me the truth." I tell her.

She sighs. "A locket and a note my mother put into my stuffed bear. My mom put a picture of her and my dad. I, I miss them." She cries.

"Oh Mija, I understand." I hug her.

"No! You don't! You didn't lose both of your parents! You still have them! And you have a sister! You're one of the lucky ones. Don't tell me you understand, ever." She snaps.

I look down and leave her room. "Talk to me when you're in a better mood. You can go with your mom today."

"She's not my real mom." Jessie whispers.
