Part 8: Memories

Year: 1909

Time: 7:22pm

Location: Crawford Residence, New York, America

Level: Second Floor

"Kate... that wasn't what I was thinking of doing when I brought you here, honestly,"

"Ah okay...so what did you want to tell me, Alex?" Kate asked. Her voice was still somewhat quaking.

"Where do I start...okay, first I will let you know that my name is real, you don't need to worry about that. It's just my age is different. You know me as as a 17-year-old. The thing is... I chose to be what age I am,"

"What?! Are you sure...th-that's...okay, go on," Kate answered, shocked and curious at the same time.

"To explain that, I have to tell you where I am from. Only then can you really understand how I can 'choose my age'."

------------------------------------------

It was a really long while before Kate fully understood me, but she didn't entirely believe me. A few hours past and she gave me a few questions as I went on with my story. We soon agreed that we would stop for now and that I would tell her more later on. I had been pacing around the room while I was telling her everything, so I sat down beside her.

"Alex, can you give me something to prove to me that everything you say is real? I trust you, but I need you to give me something to hold onto. Please," she placed her hand on mine.

"You want to hold onto proof? Okay," I stood up, gently putting her hand down, then reached behind myself and turned off the atomic-mass-dampeners and perception filters. I was suddenly aware of the weight of the Gyro-linium device strapped to my back. A shadow formed behind mine and a blue hue refracted within the room. The device wasn't large but it did make an elaborate shadow.

"Take a look at what I have attached to my back." I said as I turned around. "I built it myself and had help from some really smart friends in controlling it. It is very hard to explain how it works, mostly because it is brand new from where I come from too."

Kate gasped as she saw there was something on my back. It was shiny and had round things attached to the middle thing. She didn't really understand what it was.

"You were wearing that all along? Isn't that heavy?"

"To say things simply, this is heavy when I let it become heavy, but I can make it light all the time if I need to. Taking it off my back is easy. But I don't need to. I can wear it all the time and even sit down and it'll be like I am not wearing it. Watch this," I said as I switched on the atomic-mass-dampeners sat down next to her, leaving the perception filters off so she could still see it there.

I took her hand and slowly put it behind my back.

"Try to touch it," I said to her.

She moved her hand towards the device...but she was startled when her hand went right through what she saw.

"This- this is not real... why can't I touch it?" Kate said, moving her hands over my back but not touching the mass of spheres, wires and other things that she could clearly see.

I moved her hand away, then flicked the switch back.

"The controls alone can only be handled by either me or the engineers," I said, letting her hand return. "Okay, now try touching it,"

Kate was expecting it to not be there again, but this time when her hand moved towards the illusion on my back, she felt it was warm and was actually slightly vibrating.
