Part 56: Last of a Kind

Year: 2005

Time: 1:13pm

Location: Caravan Area, Bonneville Salt Flats, America

Level: Ground

The horde were incredibly slow as they would stop and eat and then move and stop and eat. For the moment we felt relieved that they were so slow. Considering they were given a job to do they seemed to be dragged down by their own futilities. Depression at its worst.

Tim had left us to help in taking care of the citizens and visitors that were most at risk from the horde. He called in for some assistance from Sydney's Tower and several teams warped in through their Q2 Gates to help in limiting the damage by forming a barrier around the horde to slow and at least direct them away from the majority of the people gathered here.

Tim said "Fare well in what you plan to do," before he returned to coordinating hazard teams and escorting some of the panic-stricken locals from the area.

Meanwhile, the four of us had run a reasonable distance away and had gathered at the top of a small hill that could see the horde as it shifted and heaved towards us. It was definitely headed for us alone!

"Well, you've got guts, I'll give you that." Deune grinned.

Deune and I had been discussing things between eachother for a few minutes now while Kepler stayed with Kate.

"You do know that we need to keep the gate open to make sure they all get in. That hunk of rock isn't big you know. You'll need to start running when you get there or you'll be swarmed by them."

"They aren't fast, take a look."

"They are faster in the dark, Alex,"

"Not if I slow them down with a row of time dilation spheres."

"How long so they last?"

"Hah, you haven't seen just how much I can do with them, have you?"

"I had my own experience of one, thank you for reminding me of how difficult it was getting out of one."

-----------------------------------

Kate and Kepler were watching us while Deune and I discussed plans.

"Those two get along well, don't they?" Kepler smiled, resting her head on her hand while she sat up a roof of an abandoned caravan up on the hill.

Kate managed to climb up to sit next to her, but accepted a helping hand when she was troubled.

"Thank you. Ah, yes they do."

"I have only seen that protective side of Deune when I'm in trouble. I'm glad he can be like that for someone else." Kepler turned to Kate and tilted her head in amusement.

She reached up to Kate's face, retracting her claws as she did so, and gently caressed her face.

"Hmm, I can see why Deune and the doctor like you so much. You're a pretty little thing."

"Ah, thank you." Kate shivered a little as Kepler's hand was quite cold to the touch. Kate could see the glint of the blades beneath this woman's skin. She shut her eyes and focused on what she wanted to say next, "Please don't call him 'doctor'. Kepler."

"Okay, for you I'll call him Alexander."

"Thank you. I'm glad we don't have to fight eachother." Kate had the Shard gun in mind, "Kepler, before anything happens, can you tell me about your name?"
