Part 50: Shopping

Year: 2005

Time: 11:21am

Location: El Bravo Way, Palm Beach, Florida, America

Level: Ground

We arrived in a cul-de-sac and found ourselves near the front of a large residential area. We were in a large and wealthy area and this was appropriate for someone who had such an elevator in their home.

"Do you really think we can just knock on the door and ask about their elevator?"

"Apparently this man was nice and had a good family of kids. Maybe he is home."

"So this is someone's house. Are you sure we should go here to take a look at the elevator?"

I walked to the door and knocked politely.

A tall angry mexican man burst out and yelled at me about something and slammed the door behind himself. I think he was on the phone.

"I guess not. Hmm, well some rich people are like that. Oh, haha I think I may have the wrong time." I said as I checked the date. "Three months earlier his rowdy cousin was house sitting and ended up stealing some things."

I pulled the three of us away from that house and headed that-a-way.

We walked quite a ways out of the neighbourhood to a bus stop and checked the timetable as we waited for one. It soon arrived and I paid for all of us, this was made convenient because of the new credit-card payment system there. You got on and paid at your seat. Quite efficient.

Americans get all the good tech fast.

"What should we do now?"

"Well the right house is on the other side of town. Hmm, there are display homes nearby that have it though."

Kate was gazing at the map on my console and pointed to a shopping centre on the way.

"Can we go there?"

"Ah, yes, that's where we can get a new wardrobe," Tim nodded as we all looked at the map.

A few people had turned around to watch us fiddling with my wrist-mounted interactive console and I only realised this when we were finished and I looked up.

"Um, Google-Street prototype," I mumbled and then turned away.

Kate looked all around the bus and outside. This was all new to her and she clung to my arm like a schoolgirl. It was quite cute.

'What's that? Why is that there? How can that be?' were questions I expected but Kate was curious without the questions. She watched the world go by behind a pane of glass and silently wondered how the pace of life has quickened as compared to her life before.

She turned to me and then to Tim and asked,

"Do you both live on the run like this?"

It was an odd question for both of us but Tim managed to answer yes and Kate already knew my story so I simply said, "It's different, isn't it?"

"Ooh, it's exciting! So many new things to see, so much time, so many places to go. You are free!" Kate smiled her sunny smile, there were obvious questions behind that smile but she felt happy and I didn't want to interrupt that.

The bus took us part ways to the centre of the city and then we got off at a terminal and walked towards the large shopping centre.

"This is kinda like Tiffany's but with... everything," I said as we approached some automated doors.
