"Hey, what are you doing up this late?"

She heard his soft, deep voice say over the phone.

"Technically it's what I'm doing up so early." She teased, earning her a chuckle on the other end from Josh.

Maya pressed her phone up against her ear tightly, just to make sure she heard him clearly.

"I know it's really early in the morning, but I wanted to wish you a happy birthday." Maya said, nervously chewing on her bottom lip.

Her heart was fluttering again and she begged for it to stop. How could she let herself become so weak by one person?

"You're the first today." Josh told her, she could tell he was smiling, or at least she hoped he was.

"That was the plan, but also happy Valentine's Day." Maya quickly fumbled the words out of her mouth, flinching for his response.

She was sitting in her bed, in the dark, in her PJs, looking like crap.

"I could say the same to you." He answered. Maya smiled to herself at his words. He hasn't said much, but it meant a lot to her, whether or not he knew it.

"I planned to get you a gift-"

She heard him laugh again and she instantly blushed, praising the dark.

"For my birthday? Or for Valentine's Day?" He asked, with a teasing voice that she'd never admit she loved.

"Both, now stop acting so childish, you're an adult now. . ." Her faltering voice had made Josh stop talking for a moment and she suddenly realized the weight of her statement.

So she loosened her grip on her phone and twisted her pink lips into a frown.

How did he always get farther when she tried to inch closer?

Joshua Matthews, the adult and Maya Hart, the teenager.
