She curiously tugged at the satin ribbon and let it fall onto her bedsheets.

Josh gulped nervously, scared of what she might think of his present. Her hands slowly lifted of the lid of the square box.

Her eyes lit up instantly as she pulled out a gold paintbrush with her name engraved on the side.

"No way!" She shouted a little too loudly for the night. Maya looked up at Josh who was smiling back at her.

"It's not lame?" He asked. She quickly shook her head and jumped up to hug him.

It took him by surprise, the sudden embrace, but when she pulled him in and nestled her head against his chest he instantly got comfortable.

"I love it." She mumbled into his shirt, causing him to smile as he hugged her back.

"Happy Birthday Hart." Josh said, pulling away.

"Thanks Josh, it means a lot to me." She told him, her finger wrapped tightly around the brush.

He felt very uneasy very suddenly, his head going back to his conversation with Cory a few days before.

He didn't necessarily love her, at least he didn't think he did. If he didn't, then why had he gone through so much trouble just to see her smile at 12:00 in the morning?

Josh shook away these thoughts from his head and instead grinned back at her ecstatic face.

"Well, you're growing up wonderfully, but I should let you get some rest." He said, and slowly pushed open her window.

"I'll see you at the party." Josh reminded her, climbing back out the window.

"Goodnight." She mouthed through the glass.

He gave her a small salute and wave before walking away from her bedroom.

Josh loved her then, and he partially knew.
