She was naive, and honestly pretty gullible sometimes. Maya had never said anything to him specifically, but it was 11:54 P.M.
Tomorrow was her birthday, her sweet sixteen. Time had passed so quickly and Josh was turning nineteen next month.
It was exciting for her, especially because she was getting a surprise party that Riley couldn't keep a surprise.
So she sat in bed, and stared down at her phone sitting just a few inches ahead of her.
Maya wanted him to call her the way she had called him months before. She highly doubted it was going to happen, but she was hoping.
With her legs hugged tightly to her chest she waited.
11:59 P.M.
Creak. The window slid open and a figure quickly jumped in.
"Hey!" Maya yelled, reaching for a pillow.
She stopped panicking when she realized Josh was standing there in her bedroom, almost as scared as she was.
"Happy Birthday." He whispered, sheepishly closing the window.
Maya pulled on the string to her lamp and the room lit up instantly.
12:00 A.M.
She almost immediately regretted her clothing choice of kitten PJs. Josh let out a nervous laugh and slipped a long box on the end of her bed.
"You came here to wish me a happy birthday?" She asked, letting a grin tug at the corners of her mouth.
"Yes, I thought it'd be more meaningful, but it was kind of creepy." Josh muttered, staring at the carpet of her bedroom.
"I thought it was nice." She told him, picking up the small box he had put down.
"That's your gift." He explained, shoving his hands into the pockets of his coat.
Maya smiled at him and tugged at the ribbon, letting it fall loosely onto her covers.
