Demi's POV
From the moment my eyes opened in the morning, I hadn't been able to sit still. I had been waiting for this day for an extremely long time and it had taken a lot of work and effort to get to the place I was in now. I glanced at the clock and I started my morning routine and realised I had woken up ridiculously early but without a second thought, I continued to get ready and make myself look presentable.
After coming out of a long term relationship, I made a decision to stay single for a while and really focus on myself and what I wanted from my life. I put a lot of focus into my career but began to realise how lonely I was getting. I still wasn't in the right place to be in another relationship just yet though. After a lot of thought and research, I began looking into adopting a child. If my previous relationship had worked out, we would have began starting a family and I had a strong feeling that a part of me was and had been missing for quite a while.
After speaking with my friends and family, I made the decision to start the long process involved in order to adopt a child.
I had decided to use a private agency and although they had been very efficient, regarding the paperwork and legislation required, I was yet to meet any children.
Yesterday, however, the agency had phoned to tell me all the paperwork and necessary background checks had been approved and I was able to go meet my new child today.
They emailed me a time and address and I began to prepare for the next day almost immediately. My profile book had stated that I was looking for a young child under the age of five and the court had approved my adoption so I already owned a variety of items that I would need.
I had never been to this particular children's home but it was a large, modern building that was well looked after and had lots of children.
When I arrived at the home, I was shown to a large living room full of kids. I think some of the older one recognised me but they all continued to watch the tv. All except one small girl who was sat on the floor, whispering to her teddy in the corner. Something about this adorable little girl drew me towards her and I was dying to find out more about her. I made my way over to her and crouched down to her level.
"Hey sweetheart. My name's Demi, what's your name?" I asked her. She didn't reply. I repeated myself and she looked up at me but still didn't reply.
"That's Alexa. She doesn't talk." One of the other kids replied noticing me. I looked back at this beautiful girl and took in all her features. She had huge blue eyes, a little button nose and dirty blonde hair. She looked petrified that someone had spoke to her. She was gorgeous however and I had already fallen in love with her. I gave Alexa one last smile before walking to the office in the orphanage.
"I would like to adopt a little girl called Alexa please." I told the social worker.
"HER? Are you sure? She's three, already been in many abusive homes, doesn't talk and is a little shit." I couldn't believe this woman. She was meant to be caring for these kids. "Sign the papers and I'll go get her."
I quickly signed the papers and was practically pushed out the front door with Alexa. She didn't have any belongings and there wasn't really a need in hanging around the orphanage any longer. I tried to hold her hand to lead her to the car but she pulled away.
"It's okay sweetie, I'm not going to hurt you. You'll be safe with me now."
I reached to hold her hand again and this time she didn't pull away. I lead her to my car and strapped her into the car seat that I had bought before arriving today.
"Well are you ready to come to your new home then Alexa?" I asked her. She shrugged her shoulders in reply.
At some point on the way home, Alexa fell asleep in her seat. She was in desperate need of new clothes and didn't have any toys yet so I decided I would take her shopping when she woke up.
I took her out the car and carried her upstairs to one of my spare rooms. I decided she deserved a room fit for a princess but she would just have to sleep in the spare room until I got her room decorated.
I found one of my shirts and changed Alexa out of her worn day clothes and into my top to sleep in. My shirt drowned her and I couldn't help but take a picture of how cute she was.
I tucked her in and for the first of many times in my life and convince myself to look away from the little girl that was now all mine. In my eyes, she was beautiful. Her blonde hair spread across the pillow as she slept and you could tell it was a bit unkempt for. She had small dimples as she tossed and turned but I was sure they would only get larger when she smiled or laughed. She was extremely skinny and small.
When I was changing her clothes I had seen her bruises. There were ones that looked relatively new as well as ones at the top her inside legs.
I sat and watched her sleep for a while, a little creepy I know but I was just getting used to the fact she was all mine, before going to clean my house up. I would need to attempt to keep it tidy now that I had a little one to keep an eye on. I finished tidying and went upstairs to check on Alexa. I slowly walked into the spare room and saw her curled up crying. My heart immediately broke for her. All I wanted was to make her feel happy and loved.
"Alexa what's wrong sweetie?" I asked her. No answer. She just kept crying. I picked her up from the bed. She was tense in my arms and tried desperately to escape but I held on to her tight.
"I'm not going to hurt you baby girl. I love you." I said trying to calm her but it wasn't working.
"Skies are crying, I am watching, catching tear drops in my hands. Only silence as it's ending like we never had a chance. Do you have to make me feel like theres nothing left of me? You can take everything I have. You can break everything I am like I'm made of glass, like I'm made of paper. Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper." I sung to her. At some point during the song she relaxed and stopped crying.
"That's better, no more tears. Did you have a nightmare?" I asked her, she nodded. "No one can hurt you now, I'll keep you safe. How about we go shopping and get you some clothes?" She nodded again and looked down at what she was wearing. I let out a giggle as she practically swam in my top.
"We'll put your own clothes back on for now while we get you some new ones."
While I helped her get changed, I made funny faces at her in an attempt to get her smile or laugh but I had no such luck. She had such a serious, albeit beautiful, little face and I knew I couldn't wait to see her smile.
"Come baby girl let's go shopping."
