Chapter 14:
Jade's POV:
It was Monday, I walked into English lesson, expecting Perrie to be there by now since she's always super early for this lesson but to my surprise, Perrie was not there. It was the first time in 2 months that she was not here by now. Did she catch a flu or something? No she would have told me by now if she did. I seated myself on my usual seat and greeted Zayn who was tilting a pen round and round around his two fingers, lost in some deep thought probably.
"Hey Mr Malik!" I smiled to Zayn.
"Hi Jade" he replied but with the most unenthusiastic tone I had ever heard from him. Zayn is the type of teacher who never wears a depressed look but today he seemed the most sad. Now what was eating him?
The class began shortly, everyone had come by now except for Perrie. I sneaked a peak at my phone, wishing she had left me some sort of message but there was no text or any miss calls from her. What could be the matter? After about 10 minutes, Perrie walks in, her Suede black high heel ankle boots leaving wet trials behind her as she walked in. Great! The normal dull British weather was back...
"Hey" I whispered to her quietly. She just smiled back looking half depressed. What the fish was wrong with her? Last week, she couldn't stop blushing and acting as if she was in paradise and now? This girl has bipolar I think. I saw Zayn watch her come in and sit down, his eyes permanently glued on to her as usual but he didn't say anything. He didn't even ask her why she was this late. Both were acting suspicious. Hmm...
"I think we have done enough of poetry so now I am thinking we should move on to the essay part of the course. We'll be analysing and interpreting The Tempest by Shakespeare." Zayn said.
"The Tempest is boring. Can't we do anything other than that." a girl Miley butted in from the back.
"Er we could do Romeo and Juliet too but that's harder so I think The Tempest is a better option if you all want to get good grades."
"Mr Malik. When we have you as a teacher, anything is possible." she said in a flirty tone. Who did she think she was, trying to flirt with the Zayn Malik as if she owned the place. Pathetic of popular ones to act all smug and confident. Perrie on the other hand, just kept staring at our desk in silence. We ended up doing Romeo and Juliet to Miley and the rest of the other girls' delight.
I waited for Perrie to call Zayn over as normal but today neither of them even acknowledged one another. Oh man, I had gotten used to seeing Zayn up close everyday. The day finally came to an end, I ran to the blonde head who was heading to her mum's car.
"Wait up Pez!" Perrie turned around and waited for me.
"Can I come down yours today cus I really need help in Psychology." I said, catching my breath after running so fast.
"Sure."
We were sitting on her bed, pool of notes and books scattered around us. Perrie hadn't spoken once. It was really worrying me now.
"Perrie?"
"Hmm.."
"What's wrong?" her eyes shot up at me then back down.
"Nothing."
"If you think I'm gonna fall for that, you better try again."
"Jade, nothings the matter okay. Now let's do some work."
"We've been doing that for the past half an hour and I need a break and also some answers."
"What answers?" she asked with a hint of worry.
"Just why you are acting this low?"
She paused and then said "I am not feeling well. The bad weather's got to me." I gave her an eye roll because she was such a bad liar.
"Seriously! You think I'm going to fall for that?" Perrie didn't reply.
"Perrie, seriously tell me what's the matter with you? Why are you acting as if someone's killed a puppy!"
Tears started pouring down her porcelain like face. Oh gosh. Something terrible must have happened to her. I moved closer to hug my best friend, making the hug extra tight and special. I came out of the hug and held both her hands.
"Perrie, it's fine if you don't want to share. Honestly. Just know that I will never judge you or spill your secrets ever." There was a long silence and then, "Jade, promise me you won't." her sad eyes made contact with mines, her hands getting a tighter hold on mines, looking for trust.
"Never." I reassured her. Another lengthy pause...
"I kissed Zayn"
... My hands slipped out automatically releasing more tears out of her eyes, faster than before. I knew I said I wouldn't judge her but I needed time to think about it. This was a big thing! I closed my eyes. Perrie didn't say anything but I could hear her sobbing. She said she kissed Zayn, our teacher... I don't blame her because I admired Zayn enormously too (who didn't?) but I also know there are certain boundaries one can't cross. Perrie is smart, she should know better. Then I thought some more.
Since Perrie had started Hilton college, Zayn had never been the same again. He would pay equal attention to all before but since her arrival, it was as if he had forgotten that everyone else existed in the class. Similarly, Perrie too acted obsessed and clingy to him, whenever someone else asked for his help, especially if it were some girl then she would make sure he was back to helping her as soon as possible. Both of them wanted to be in each others company during the lesson, I noticed that much. As much as I hate to admit, Zayn clearly has feelings for her too, at least in my opinion. I knew I could never get him to like me like that.
"Perrie? Do you love him?" Please say no. Please say no. She nodded. Oh crap! Why did she have to make things even more complicated.
"I knew it from the first day I met him..." she continued.
"It was first those eyes and then I fell in love with everything about him, from his smile to his voice to his -
"Perrie!" I shook her.
"You can't love him, he's your teacher whom you barely know." Regret washed over me instantly after. I had no right to say that to her. It wasn't her fault, she was doing nothing wrong to be honest.
"I am so sorry!" I apologised and hugged her extremely tightly, letting her know I would always be there for her. Always. Her hands flew around mines and we both hugged it out.
"You don't think it's wrong?"
"Well, it is and it's not at the same time. Depends whether you want to listen to your brain or your heart."
Perrie smiled a real smile for the first time today.
"That's been my motto for the last two days."
"Wait what? Last two days? When did you two actually taste each others saliva?"
"EW! Gross Jade!" She threw a pillow at me, making me do the same, ending in a long messy pillow fight. Both of us couldn't help the fits of laughter by the time we had finished.
