The sudden stop of the car just happened to wake me up from my sleep. Yawning, I looked outside of the window, wondering where we were. I gasped as my eyes landed on a huge house, or, more like, mansion.

"Dad?" I asked, staring outside. "Where are we?" This was nothing like my house in Nevada, where there was sand and rocks as far as the eye could see. In fact, it was the exact opposite- green everywhere.

"I already told you, honey," my dad said, forced patience evident in his voice.I probably asked him this a couple of times already. "We're here in Florida- Miami, Florida, to be exact. We'll be staying here now."

I rolled my eyes. By 'we' he obviously meant 'me'. That's right, me. Alone. In this great big house in an entirely different state by myself. That's alright though, I practically lived by myself in our old house, so it's not like anything would be thatdifferent, right? Turns out, I was wrong.

"There's someone I'd like you to meet. So you won't be lonely, when I'm away," my dad continued.

"What?! How old do I look- seven? I do NOT need a babysitter to take care of me! I perfectly fine by myself!" I snapped, glaring at my dad. How would he know if I was lonely or not? He was barely even home, anyways. The longest he was home was to tell me that we were moving and help me pack all of our stuff.

"He's not your babysitter, Lex," my dad said softly, calling me by my nickname. His hand was reaching towards me, about to stroke my hair like when I was little. I quickly dodged his hand, turning away from him. I never did forgive him for what he did.

You see, after my mother's death, about three years ago, my dad quickly shut himself from me. He arranged all of his meetings in different places, so he'd be traveling all the time, instead of at home, with me. I guess it was because I looked exactly like my mother- from my warm, chocolate eyes, to my red velvet cupcake hair. Everything about me reminded my dad of my mom, so he did his best to stay away from me.

"Yeah," a different voice whispered in my ear, "I'm not your babysitter."

I must've not been paying attention or I would've heard his footsteps coming toward me. But I didn't. I whirled around, intending on telling whoever had that deep, slightly husky voice that he wasn't needed so he could get the heck out of here. But I stopped short when I laid eyes on him. Apparently, my dad knew how to pick hot guys, I'll give him that.

The guy was tall- about a head taller than my 5'3, I'd guess he was about 5'11. He had black hair that was curly in the front, his brown eyes held back laughter. What really caught my attention, though, was how he was SHIRTLESS!

"Jake Highland, nice to meet you," he said, holding his hand out, "I'm your new... living buddy."

"Living buddy?" I repeated, laughing. I placed my hand in his, shaking it, "I'm Alexis Taylors, the kid you're not babysitting," I reply.

Jake laughs, "This'll be an interesting living arrangement."

Hearing his laugh- a kind of rough yet sexy growl-ish laugh- I realize that I like his laugh. Shaking my head, I silently agree with Jake. This will be an interesting living arrangement.
