"Pick up, pick up, pick up," I chanted, staring at my computer screen. As it continued to ring, I sighed in frustration. "Please, please pick up," I whispered, hoping that in some weird way, Jake would hear and accept my FaceTime request.
12:54 A.M., my computer read. I quickly calculated the time difference from here and Miami. It should almost be eight at night back there, so he would hopefully be free.
Just as I was about to give up and quit the call, Jake's face appeared on my computer. I let out a breath, taking in all his features. It's been weeks since we've been able to FaceTime, but today I was about to give him some news and I wanted to see his reaction.
"Lex, hey!" Jake greeted me with a huge grin.
Unconsciously, a smile slid on my face that matched his. "Hi Jake. Sorry to call you out of nowh-"
His laughter filled the otherwise quiet hotel room, "Sorry? Man, this is great; we haven't been able to FaceTime recently." It was true. We texted and called each other- mostly texted because of the time differences- as much as possible but because we could barely talk to each other for more than five minutes at a time, it was difficult to find a time to FaceTime.
"Hey, who are you talking to, man?" Came from behind Jake. He turned to look, giving me view of Russ, whom I assume was the one who asked the question. Once he caught a glimpse of me from Jake's screen, he yelled, "What up, Lex?!"
I laughed as Jake tried to get him to shut up, but to no avail. Footsteps could be heard, presumably going to Jake's room, and he groaned. His door, which was partially open from Russ walking in, busted open to reveal John, Liam, Nicole and Dawn.
"Guys, look, I'm trying to-"
"Lex!" Nicole and Dawn screamed, cutting Jake off. They rushed forward so that they were next to Jake, waving madly at me.
"Hey guys," I responded, waving back to them. I noticed, though, that two people were missing. "Where are Leah and Drew?"
"Their flight comes in the day after tomorrow," Nicole informed me.
I nodded; Leah and Drew- besides Jake- were the only ones that decided to go out of state for college. It was expensive as hell, but worth it, as I heard that they both were going to start interning later this summer. It was the dream job- for both intern and as a real one- for them and it was all they would talk about whenever the subject of jobs came up. Both of them go to the same university in Colorado, so it was very convenient for them when they decided to start dating. Believe me, I was shocked when I found out- I thought that Leah would still be crushing on John- but nevertheless happy for them.
Jake, on the other hand, decided to go study in California. I could tell he loved it there and whenever I was in California, to work at Crystallize Records, and had time- which wasn't often- I would visit Jake and we would go out to eat if he had time. Nicole, Dawn, John, Liam and Russ all decided to go to college in Florida, albeit in different parts of Florida.
Since it was the start of summer, though, everyone decided to go back to Russ's house for the summer. It was a huge two story house with enough room for everyone. It was nice of Russ's parents to allow them to stay, but- as Russ, who had told Jake who told me, said- it gave them the perfect opportunity to get away and enjoy time with each other in their small vacation house.
"I'm going to rub it in Leah's face when she gets here," Dawn announced to me, bringing me back to the present. "She'll be so jealous."
I laughed because I knew it was true. When Leah found out that I was doing a bunch of charity concerts and events in England, she freaked out. I'm not sure if she noticed, but she has a boyfriend, so I wouldn't be looking for the perfect British boyfriend for her even if she paid me to. "Tell her I developed a London accent and found you two the perfect boyfriends," I told Nicole and Dawn. I wish I would be there to see Leah's face when she hears that.
