Jake and I nodded mutually. I walked up to the front row, squatting down so that my gaze was directly in front of hers- not lower, not higer.
I smiled. "And what would you like us to sing today, Sweetie?"
The little girl- she looked around 3 or 4- smiled widely back at me. "Um... Mommy says that she likes the song 'It Will Rain' by one of the planets."
I cocked my head to the side. "One of the planets?" It hit me. Funny, kid, funny. I giggled. "Do you mean Bruno Mars?"
"Yeah, one of the planets," she smiled at me again.
"Do you want to hear that song?" I asked her.
The little girl nodded. "Can I deduct it for my mommy?"
"Deduct?" I had no idea what she meant.
A lady kneeled down next to the little girl. "I think she means 'dedicate' it, don't you, Sarah?"
The little girl nodded, smiling, and hugging the lady. "Mommy! Lookie, lookie! She's going to sing the song from one of the planets... The one that you like!"
The lady looked at me, curious to what her daughter means.
I laughed, smiling at the lady. "She wants to dedicate this song to you." I got up, going back to Jake.
"Uh, Jake? Do you have a-" I started only to be cut off when someone shoved something against my side. "Ow!" I whimpered, turning to find a smiling Russ.
The thing he shoved against me was a small keyboard. "Here," Russ said, "Someone let me borrow it. I'll take the guitar back to Drew."
"Thanks Russ," I grinned. When Russ turned to go, I pulled on the back of his shirt, remembering something.
"What?" Russ looked back.
"You could get a keyboard, but you couldn't get food? Or a cell phone? Or-"
"Hey, I'm only borrowing it, alright? No need to get mad. Besides, it was Dawn who did the deal for you- I'm just the messenger." With that, Russ left.
I stared at Russ, before going to Jake. "Is that the one that runs on batteries?"
Jake nodded. "Alright, it's all set up."
"You know what to do, right?" I asked Jake.
Jake nodded, again.
"Good, 'cause you're the one that singing most of it this time," I said, laughing.
"At least it's not the whole song by myself, like someone," Jake replied.
I shook my head, smiling. Hoisting myself up, I looked at the crowd until all of them were silent. "Alright, my name's Alexis and this song was requested by the little girl in the front, known as Sarah, I'm guessing. She wants to dedicate this to her mom. Jake and I'll be doing a cover of 'It Will Rain' by Bruno Mars, hope you guys enjoy!"
I counted down this time. "And a one, a two, a one, two, three, four..."
Jake started playing the keys on the keyboard. I looked around, the sun was still out and it was still warm. I'm guessing it was sometime around 4, maybe 4:30. I refocused on Jake when he started singing.
"If you ever leave me, baby, leave some morphine at my door- aye. 'Cause it'll take a whole lot of medication, to realize what we used to have, we don't have it anymore! There's no religion that could save me- no matter how long my knees are on the floor- aye. So keep in mind all the sacrifices I'm making, to keep you by my side, to keep you from walking out the door!"
