The smell of something burning drifted into my room, waking me up. I cracked one eye open, sniffing the air cautiously. Something was definitely burning. I jumped out of bed, racing down the stairs, following the burnt smell as it got stronger and stronger until I was just outside of the kitchen. Barging in, I stopped immediately, taking in the sight in front of me.
"Um... what are you doing?" I asked. "And you know the food's burning."
Jake, startled, turned around, a strained look on his face. "Thank you, Captain Obvious," he snapped, turning back to his disaster in a pan, trying to somehow resurrect it to make it- at least- somewhat edible.
Shaking my head, I went over and turned off the stove. After the smoke cleared, Jake and I both stared at the frying pan in shock.
Turning to him, I asked, "You... you... that?" I gestured to what remained of the bacon- black, charred bits of bacon.
Looking away and rubbing his neck, Jake blushed. "Ican'tcook," he muttered.
"What?"
"I. Can't. Cook," Jake huffed, "You can laugh all you want now."
I stared at him blankly, not saying a word.
"What?" Finally irritated, Jake asked.
"I never asked if you could cook... So why'd you cook? It's not like you had to or anything."
Jake heaved a sigh, "I was trying to be nice."
"What?" I was confused, how was waking me up at- I checked my phone- 8:30 in the morning, burning bacon, and snapping at me 'trying to be nice'?
A light bulb must've flickered on top of my head. "You tried to cook me breakfast?" I asked slowly.
"Took you long enough, Lex."
I burst out laughing.
Jake scowled. "What's so funny?"
Wiping the tears out of my eyes, I smiled back at him. "Nothing, everything's just peachy. Now, come on, I'll make breakfast."
"Fine, but hurry up. I've got the whole day planned already."
I turned and faced him, my mouth open, but no words were coming out. He smirked at me and clapped his hands, "Chop, chop, slave. You're not paid to stand there and gawk at me."
Muttering to myself, I started on breakfast.
After I was done cooking breakfast- tater tots, bacon, and scrambled eggs-, Jake and I started to eat. After a moment of silence, Jake decided to speak up.
"Don't you think it's weird how we're living together, but we know practically nothing about each other?"
"Well," I drew out the word, "we did just meet yesterday."
"Yeah, but shouldn't we know more about each other? Like I don't even know what your favorite color is."
I thought for a second. "I love pale pink and white, you?"
"White?" Jake made a face, "That's not even a color! And mine's is green, by the way."
I laughed, "Oh god, the look that you just made- it looked like you were constipated!" I couldn't help myself, every time I was about to stop laughing, I thought of his facial expression, and I started laughing even harder.
