September thirteenth is a day that I wished never existed. For a variety of reasons. The first being it's a Friday - Friday the thirteenth. Which, in itself, proves that it's bound to be horrible. The second reason is that it is Bella Swan's birthday. Not that I dislike this-reality-Bella, she's nice enough and stopped ogling over Edward. She's still a little bit dopey looking, sure, but she's nice and pretty funny. The third reason - Jacob Black dropped Bella off at school just as we were pulling in.
They were on a motorcycle, Edward had growled at them in irritation and Alice got the vampire equivalent to a migraine. I was reading and because of Edward's sudden stop, I hit my head against the window and lost my page.
Just a horrible beginning to a destined-to-be-horrible day.
"Oh, hoover dam it, Edward - you have supernatural reflexes!" I glared at the back of his head, rubbing my own with the heel of my palm.
"Dog alert." Alice said with a side glance at me.
"Well, duh, it's Bella's birthday." I muttered. "I might not have liked Jacob Black in the books but if he didn't drive his soulmate to school, I'd consider him a failure."
Edward rolled his eyes at me in the rear-view mirror. "I get the hint, Edy."
"She told you, like, eight times." Alice giggled.
Edward grinned triumphantly. "I already got Tanya a birthday present."
"Good it's in two weeks." I teased.
"Mind your own business and get to your first class, you'll be late." Edward parked and put killed the engine, sliding out of the driver's seat with the stupid fluidity of a vampire. "Come on, Edythe, I was serious about being late."
*
"Hey, Bella," I smile as we pass each other at the end of the day. "Happy eighteenth birthday!"
"Thanks, Edythe!" Bella waved. "Have a good weekend."
"You two! Eat lots of cake!" I follow her out of school, parting as she goes to the throng of Rez kids crowding around two beat up pickups while I head to Edward's Volvo, eyes darting around the parking lot as I make my way over to Alice and Edward -
And Jasper!
Grinning, I jogged over, side hugging Jas before Alice ran over, tackling him in a hug.
"How's high school been?" Jasper drawled.
"Boring as hell, how's college been?" Edward slapped Jasper's back in greeting, leaning against the car.
"Boring as hell," Jasper grinned.
Speaking of hell -
"Edythe get in the car." Edward's smile dropped and he stood up properly, growling at something over my shoulder.
I started to follow his gaze behind me but Jasper nearly tore the hinges off the door as Alice pushed me in the car. "Don't," She hissed, jumping in beside me, "Keep your head down, Edy."
"What's going on?" I demanded as the boys jumped in the car and Edward's wheels were squealing as we peeled out of the parking lot. "Edward - I mean it, I'll jump out if you don't tell me -"
"Wolf." Edward snarled, the sound ripping out of his throat violently enough for me to shut up and squeeze my eyes shut.
"We shouldn't have left," Jasper said.
