The gray blanket of clouds wasn't a blessing that morning. Last night I thought I wanted Esme and Carlisle with me. Then Jasper was dropping me off and I was suddenly wishing that Lily was with me to make jokes and squeal. Or... I wish I was alone.
Jasper knew that, too. He always knew what I was thinking... sometimes better than Edward did.
But as we crossed what was once the Treaty line, I looked out the window and saw a gray wolf, a sandy-colored wolf, and the black wolf that I knew was Sam. They were already waiting for me. It made my stomach churn.
"Relax, Edythe," Jasper said without looking at me or the wolves. "It's fine."
"Easy for you to say," I mumbled. "Why am I so nervous?" Even as I asked, I knew - God, why was this so complicated? I'm not the boy-crazed, dramatic type!
Jasper did look at me that time. "The whole situation is stressful. First, they came to our home and offered the change the Treaty. Then they allow you to make demands... it would be a lot for anyone, don't overthink it this."
"I overthink everything."
"I know, Edy."
"What happens if -"
"No." Jasper made a smooth turn along the edge of the road and we passed a cliff with the ocean below. By September 14th, it was bound to be warm-ish still. "No 'what ifs'. Do you understand me?"
"Yessir," I grumbled and forced myself to look at the padded ceiling of the car.
"Good. Because we're almost here."

The house Jasper pulled into had a driveway full of old pickups, a motorcycle, and a trunk for clothes.
Paul was waiting on the porch, fully clothed and relatively cool-looking, as if Jasper's presence wasn't a problem at all.
When Jasper put the car in park, I didn't move.
"Jaz?" I looked over to him. "Why is this such a big deal?"
"You're overthinking it, Edy." He chuckled lightly, his accent making it sound pleasant.
"Oh," I took a deep breath. "Right."
I got out of the car, pulling my sweater closer around me before looking back in the car. "Are you coming?"
"I'll be back to pick you up in a few hours." Jasper promised. "Deal?"
"Deal." Raking my fingers through my hair, I kicked the door close and walked up the long driveway, worrying my bottom lip between my teeth. I heard Jasper pull out of the driveway before I reached the first step and forced myself not to look back at him.
"Hi, Edythe."
Paul was smiling at me now, looking almost like he was guilty. I wasn't dramatic, I wasn't going to overthink it. We aren't in love; there's no reason to be. So I smiled and waved back.
"Hey." I walked up the steps until we were on the same landing.
"Do you want to come in?" he asked, gesturing to the back door. "Emily made breakfast."
I nodded in response and followed him inside.
Nine wolves, one man, and three women turned to stare at me as I followed Paul inside.
"Hey, Edythe," Bella Swan waved at me, a muffin in her hand. "Welcome to the club."
