Reese Witherspoon as Audrey Hale

I stared at the ceiling of my room, muttering the different forms of calligraphy. I like calligraphy class. It was a way to calm myself from all the stress build-up from school--and trust me, there was a lot. However, my thought's were constant being interrupted by the faint howling of an... animal, I guess. I sat up and glanced out my window, but didn't see anything--yet the howling kept going.

"Do you hear that, David? Gosh, those Brandy folks are up all night causing ruckuses!" mom complained loudly. I frowned. They were pretty loud. I mean, this happened every night for the past year.

I opened my door and stuck my head out to see if my mom was on the couch, but she was in the kitchen mixing up some breakfast at midnight. I grinned and stepped out, poking her, making her jump.

"Jesus! Winter, you scared the crap out of me. What's up?" she asked. I shook my head and sat down at the dinner table and started chewing on some goldfish crackers.

"Mr. Hounstooth said I'm on my way to a good college. Go me." I said unenthusiastically. Mom chuckled and flipped her pancakes.

"You know, even though you're a straight A student, you don't have to apply for a great college. I was a good student too--had perfect marks straight across the board, but I still went to a community college. Unless you have something big planned for yourself in the future, I would think big for now, but when the time comes, you'll know what to do." Mom said. My jaw was open for a whole minute. I never knew mom went to a community college. She was way too smart for that. I was about to reply when a shriek--a blood curdling cry came from the outside. Mom and I looked up, the looked outside, then looked at each other, then ran out simultaniously.

We got outside and found many people gathered around an area. I scurried over to see what the commotion was, but there was so many people, I could barely get past human barricade. Then, I bumped into someone, which sent me stumbling back. I rubbed my nose and looked up.

"Sorry, I--" I said when I saw him. He had brownish-reddish hair and sharp green eyes. He was about 6-feet tall--maybe taller--and wore a red, plaid flannel with cargo pants with sandals. He stared at me with awe. I shook my head of the thought. "Sorry, I was trying to see what was going on." I said. He shook his head in disagreement.

"You shouldn't look at it. It's pretty gory." he said, walking past me. I frowned and restarted my attempt to get past the people, which I accomplished 5 minutes later. I stood there--frozen--in front of a bloody scene. There was a girl, she was in high school and her body was lying on the ground in a pool of blood. I gasped. I had never seen a dead body before--and I didn't plan to--but now that there was one in front of me, I didn't know what to do. I stepped back, but stepped on someone's toes--then I stepped forward, but the irony smell of blood filled my nose. I pinched my nose and stood there, my heart throbbing. I glanced around, looking for possible signs of murder, but all there was was a cracked beer bottle.

Then I felt a hand pull me back into the crowd and then back into the open. I exhaled sharply in relief. I looked up to find the same boy from before. He seemed to be glaring at me.

"Didn't I say you shouldn't look at it?" he scolded. I flinched.

"S-Sorry..." I said. An apologetic expression flashed across his face and he sighed. He ran his hand through his hair.

"No, I'm sorry." he muttered. He turned and started to walk away, but I caught him by the sleeve and pulled him back. He looked back in surprise.

"I... What's your name?" I asked. He froze, then smiled.

"Jeffery."

"Winter. Thank you, Jeffery, for helping me. If you hadn't, I probably would've passed out." I said. Jeffery's smile widened.

"Glad to help." he said backing into a house. I looked at the nameplate. Brandy.

He was the Howling Boy.
