····The Prefect····
"Winter, I dunno, I don't like this place..." Jeffrey said as I rang Charlie's doorbell. I glanced him and shook his arm playfully.
"Hey... it's gonna be alright. Charlie is not like the others. She's chill and welcoming. But just to make sure... you're not allergic to chocolate, right?" I asked. I shrugged.
"I've never had it. Joy's allergic and mom doesn't allow it in the house. Besides, I mostly eat meat." I said. I nodded slowly.
"Well, alrighty then." I said and waited for the door to open. I expected Charlie's aunt to come out, but Charlie appeared with shorts and a baggy hoodie on. She had glasses on and her hair was up in a bun.
"Hi." she said looking at me, then Jeffrey. I felt his hand clench and he tensed up. He always acted this way when he met with strangers. "Mr. Jeffrey Brandy. Its nice to meet you again. My name is Charlie--"
"Charles?" he blurted. Charlie and I both looked at him and gave him a weird look.
"What?"
"Your name is Charles? I had a wolf named Charles. He--well, he wasn't actually a pet because dad said we couldn't keep wild animals inside, but every excursion, I would go see Charles. So... your name is Charles?" Jeffrey blurted out. I tried not to laugh, but a little giggle escaped.
"Jeffrey, her name isn't--"
"Its okay, Winter," Charlie said with a little smirk. She tool off her glasses and wiped it with her hoodie. "Why don't you come in?"
{~}
"So Jeffrey, tell me," Charlie said as she opened her mini fridge and handed Jeffrey and I bottled water and herself some iced tea. "Are you two dating?"
Jeffrey did a spit take with his water and I felt like drooling out mine.
"W-Woah, I didn't think that--Winter and I--we're not--" Jeffrey tried to speak, but he was too flustered. I blushed and tried to cool my face with the water. I turned to Charlie and she seemed to be holding back her laughter.
"Sorry, did I hit a nerve?" she gave me a sarcastic, apologetic look. I rolled my eyes.
"How's Mallory?"
"Ah, I snuck--"
"You mean hack." I said. Charlie glared at me.
"I am not a hacker," she implied. I shrugged. She was obviously a hacker, but she didn't want to believe it herself because hackers are seen as criminals. To my guess. "Anyways, I snuck into the hospitals security system and found Mallory. She's, unfortunately, still unconscious and luckily there's been no suspicious activity. No Davey, no killer. At least... hopefully not." Charlie said I frowned. She said that like she knew there would be a killer.
"Mallory... you mean that one blondie?" Jeffrey asked. Charlie nodded.
"But you know what's really... intriguing? Mallory's attendance hasn't moved. She hasn't been counted as here... or absent." Charlie said. I raised my eyebrows.
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means either she's been kicked out of school or someone's been manipulating the school system." Jeffrey said. We both turned our eyes to Charlie and she gave us a look of disbelief.
"I didn't do it! Mallory Govern can get all the absentees she wants without my help. But if what Jeffrey said is true, she's either been dropped out forcefully, or someone's been manipulating the system. I vote for the second option."
"I second that." Jeffrey said. Now all eyes were on me.
"Okay, okay, if some were to manipulate the system, who would it be?" I asked. Charlie shrugged.
"Mallory's dad is a man with fat dough, so he could've paid someone not to mark Mallory absent." Charlie said. My mouth formed into a frown. There were tons of teachers in Remington that could manipulate the system. I was about to open my mouth when Charlie's phone went off. She glanced at it, but her lip, and put it back in her pocket.
"Who's that?" Jeffrey asked. Gee, he really knew something about privacy, didn't he?
"....A friend." Charlie simply said. I frowned. It was obviously Jason. Ever since their little quarrel, they barely talked to each other. At least... Charlie didn't talk to him.
"Back to the subject," I said. "Did they say that Davey was responsible for killing Audrey." I asked. Charlie shook her head.
"Nope," she said popping the p. "A couple of days before the police arrested Davey, I... 'broke' into his house, you could say. When I got there, there as no sign of a weapon except for a 9mm/.38 caliber which has never been used."
"And since Audrey didn't die with a gun shot to the head," I said. Charlie nodded.
"She must've been hit with something else. I haven't seem Audrey's body, but my best guess is that she was hit with a heavy object. Like a weight, or something metal. Something capable of making a dent in someone's cranium." Charlie said. We both nodded, trying to look over the possible weapons.
"So Davey isn't the killer... have we gotten anywhere in this case?" I asked. Charlie grunted and chugged down her iced tea.
"You guys are wrong," Jeffrey said. We both turned our heads towards him. He had been oddly quiet this whole time. "She wasn't hit with a metal object.... it was a glass bottle. Then someone snapped her neck." Jeffrey said. Charlie leaned in closer and rested her elbows on her legs.
"How do you know?" Charlie asked.
"Because when dad slaughters deer, he snaps their necks and trust me, that's how a snapped neck looks like. Plus, she was already drunk to the point where she would've knocked out by someone poking her." Jeffrey said. I gasped. I remembered seeing broken pieces of glass all around Audrey. And Jeffrey was also one of the first people to actually see Audrey, so he knows more than anyone.
And there was only one person who knew this...
"Beatrice," I growled.
"Sylvester." Charlie finished my sentence.
