Chapter 11: AmberAlert
__

Once the sound died down, and it wasn't five Walkers at my window at a time. It only ended up being one ever so often, I placed my plastic bag up to the seat. Opening the door ever so slightly before fully coming out, the entire group was out and about.

As I ran to the rest of them, I saw Carol crying her eyes out while Lori tried desperately to calm her down. I did not know what was going on until Carol herself cried out 'two walkers are after my little girl,' and that is when my heart stopped entirely.

During my days as a Firewatcher, I have seen and escorted hundreds of families in and out. Helping or guiding them in the right direction, but every once in a while. We get a missing children's or a missing persons. And almost a quarter of the time do we find a body. But this. This is entirely different.

Going over the camper, rounding the corner behind so no one could see. I change shirts, trying quickly to do so. And as I was just getting my head into my new shirt. Daryl popped around the corner, looking the other way for a moment before I had my shirt over my stomach.

"Rick's back, Sophia's still missin'."
Rounding to Daryl's bike do I hold up his shirt and place it in his duffle bag, along with the plastic bag I had found before. Claiming it to be mine is better than keeping it in the camper where anyone could take it.

He led the way towards Rick, Glenn and Shane, where they were waiting on us. Because they assume we can track her through the woods, perhaps I could. But I know Daryl could. Following Rick down to the waterbed I slung my bow over my shoulder and dug my pants into the boots. They were waterproof...Hopefully.

Going down into the water with the rest of them, other than Glenn who was standing in the walkway.

"Sure this is the spot...?"

"I left her right here."
Looking in the broken down tree, no sign of Sophia at all. I looked to Rick as he continued to explain the situation.

"I drew the walkers way off in that direction up the creek...She was gone by the time I got back here. I figured she just took off and ran back to the group. I told her go that way and keep the sun on her left shoulder."
Very pacific direction for a little girl to follow. But something might have scared her off to run an opposite way, whatever had happened. I am not leaving until we find her.

"Hey short round, stand to one side. You're muckin' up the trail."

He looked confused at to what that meant, so I motions my hand flat to the other side. Just to one side is all we need so we don't confuse his prints with any others.

"Assuming she knows her lefts from her rights."

"Shane, she understood me fine."
"Kid's tired and scared, man. She had her a close call with two walkers. Got to wonder how much of what you said stuck."
For the first time in awhile, I finally agreed with Shane. I do not think she fully understood the scenes of direction, or got scared off. Rounding off near Daryl and I look between the bush, whistling had Daryl shoot his head on over. He pointed to them and got everyone attention.

"Got clear prints right here. She did like you said, headed back to the highway. Let's spread out, make our way back."

As soon as Daryl had gotten up to the ground once more, he stuck out his hand. Passing my bow to my left I took his forearm as he hoisted me up. Before going back into the position of holding my bow returned in a split second as I followed the trail shortly behind him.
