Chapter 12: Group Effort
__
The hot air soon became unbearable, sometime during the night I think I took my boots off, but now. As I strap the laces tighter around once more, not daring to have a Walker bite my leg from the ground.
I take the ladder down, having my bow and pack already on hand. The only addition was Daryl's bag, the extra clothes laid. I doubt he will wear the ones I had found him, but it was an attempt of a thank you. For letting me use his.Seeing the group around a car, I looked. Seeing a very high class assortment of silent weapons being rolled out like a mat, beauty to my eyes.
"Everybody takes a weapon."
I eyed one in particular, but I rather have someone else armed than myself. Already having a knife and all, but this was an entirely different story here.
"These aren't the kind of weapons we need. What about the guns?"
Andrea was the one to speak out about this, and my brain clenched. I didn't honestly feel safe with just anyone holding a gun. Especially when they have no instinct with it, the few requirements to be a fire-watcher was to take a few courses unless you have a permit.I had one, but even more the reason to take this class. I wanted more training with an instructor, but even then did I end up taking a crossbow class.
"We've been over that. Daryl, Rick and I are carrying...Blake you loaded?"
Nodding. He agreed with it having Andrea scoff. I thought I had made it clear in my twenty questions that I know what I am doing.
"We can't have people popping off rounds every time a tree rustles...Say somebody first at the wrong moment, a herd happens to be passing by. See then it's game over for all of us."
Shane's argument was on the right track, until he brought up the last bit. There was no way in hell anyone would be able to know if a herd is close by, that is an honest mistake for any one of us carrying a gun could make.
"The idea is to take the creek up about five miles, turn around and come back down the other side. Chances are, she'll be by the creek. It's her only landmark."
At first sight of this project, I assumed it would be the regular couple that would take this. But in fact, it was everyone. And to be honest, I was not comfortable in the given situation. It means more danger, and something more likely to happen.
Rubbing my eyes while following the group did I almost bump into Daryl before me.
"Get enough sleep?"
"Just about."
Was all I said before we continued walking side by side, I smirked at the sight of his new shirt. Chuckling at the thought of him cutting off the sleeves of a very nice shirt. My pack was around my waist, while the bow was strictly within my hands. Aimed low eyes up.Trying so desperately to keep quiet had Daryl continue to look over his shoulder to me, compared to everyone behind me. It was obnoxiously loud.
Just by his eyes I could tell he didn't expect everyone to join, especially Carl. As young as he is, he could have been in the same situation as Sophia. But the loud conversation behind us, along with the foot steps. Earned another sigh.
A tap on the shoulder had me steady my bow as Daryl pointed to a tent stationed between the trees. Crouching down lower did I scurry on across the opposite end of Daryl. While everyone shuffled on over, giving away the entire position of us all by their god damn foot steps. Going farther out did he cover my flank, and I his opposite. Until he disregarded it entirely, slipping out his knife as he lowered his bow. Following his order of staying back, he looked between the mesh of the fabric. Trying to take a peak of what might be in there.
