Chapter 143: ↠Back&BetterThanEver↞

__

"I could've gone with Tara. I could've told her I loved her, but I didn't because I was afraid. That's what's stupid. Not coming out here, not facing my shit. And it makes me sick that you guys aren't even trying because you're strong and you're smart and you're both really good people, and if you don't wake..."
My face trembled before I could analyze what happened, an arrow pierced through her eyes socket. And by the sudden tilt of her head, did I see the green and white arrow.

That was Daryl's.

I remember it.

He always had a thing for the colored ones.

"...up...and face your..."
She began to fall into Daryl's arms and he moved forward, catching her lifeless body while my hands were at the ready at the trigger to fire to whoever shot Denise. Cocking the gun, only to be met by dozens of men coming from all different directions from the bushes.
It felt like every which way there was a new target to lock onto.

They all held different sorts of weapon at the ready as well, the little red circle that I've been so keen at putting my eye through. Just gave me the indication of which one was speaking towards us.

"You drop 'em now!"

Looking around, realizing what this really is was a planned ambush.
I followed their order and dropped it. And it was a good thing I did so, for Eugene was being held at gunpoint. However it wasn't what caught my eye, nor what they were glued on to now, it was Daryl's bow.
In the hands of another asshole.

"Daryl..."
I mumbled, and he listened. Listened before the blond half-faced man looked at him. Having nothing more than a smirk rising up to the conversation, I vaugly recall the description Daryl gave me about the people who took his bike.
Took his shit and ran, all after he offered Alexandrea.
"Well, hell..."
The man mumbled, and my husband began shifting his weight back and forth. I realize how much anger he had stocked on in him once he recognized the stranger, as his glare was directed solely to this man.
The only thing left from his old life is his vest and that bow, perhaps the given arrows we have back home.

Nothing more.

"You got something to say to me?...You gonna clear the air? Step up on that high horse?"
He yelled on out, chuckling. Having the higher power must be sweet relief since the steam coming from Pookie was more than I could handle from here. The sudden pick of his breath and his chest puffing up and down had caused me to swallow thickly.
I don't think I've ever seen him this mad.
"...No. You don't talk much."
The man nicked his head back towards his men, having two come on over to search me. And if it wasn't for the obvious hatred in Daryl's eyes to this man before us, the man checking and touching me must have gotten the same face.

But the henchman's only concern was disarming me, taking my knife, my pistols, and assault rifle from my hands. Once they were done, I snuck a look back at Denise. She didn't even stand a chance in this new world, not even the sliver of hope. She's been helping me through my recovery as much as my family has...
But now she was no longer with us, and my heart ached.

"Still getting the hang of her...Kicks like a bitch, but-"
"I should've done it."
"Oh, what's that? Seriously, I didn't catch what you said."
"I should've killed you."
I wish I could scold him for that type of admission of the truth, especially when all our lives were on the line.

"Yeah, you probably should've. So here we are...Kind of begs the question, right? Who brought this on who? I mean, I get that you'll just have to take my word for this, but...She wasn't even the one I was aiming for."
My heart missed a beat. Along with it came a quick breath of air, he could have been taken away from me with just an itch of actual patience from this man. The sheer number of luck to the only person that kept me stable in the time of forgetfulness was here, alive. And the one who medically got me through it was laying on the ground dead.
