[ five ] -- doctor's appointment
“Do you like the nun?”
“Of course not.” Ashton shook his head, suddenly going nervous.
Michael smirked, “He does!”
“Look at that face, he loves her!” Luke joined in on the teasing.
“I don’t!” Ashton insisted.
Calum laughed at the sight of his band mate. It was easy to notice the accusation made him nervous. “This is fucking priceless. Can you imagine that? A guy like you, in love with a girl like her! That doesn't happen.”
Luke and Michael laughed along with Calum. Ashton’s face contorted in annoyance. “I’m not in love with her. But if I was, what would be wrong with that?”
Michael scoffed. “Are you really asking that? She’s not one of us.”
"One of us?" Ashton cocked an eyebrow at them.
Calum responded, “She’s…a book worm, a church nut, a…”
“Alright,, alright already!” Ashton exclaimed.
“Stop defending her, Ash.” Michael said.
“He’s probably been possessed by the nun.” Luke joked.
Calum nodded his head in agreement. “The nun and the punk rock star.” The three boys laughed and bumped fists.
“I can’t talk to you guys about anything.” Ashton muttered angrily. “I’m gonna go to sleep now.”
Without saying more to them, he headed to his room for the night. The boys were quiet as well, having witnessed something out of the ordinary for Ashton. He was usually smiley and chirpy, but this time it was the complete opposite.

A red car pulled up on the driveway to the Carrigan home the next morning.
Ashton’s anger from the previous night had died down, but he still felt like his friends were being unfair to Prudence. He was intrigued by her and even wanted to befriend the awkward sixteen year old.
Lucy opened the door for the four boys and threw herself onto Calum as her mum and Prudence walked around them to get out the front door.
Ashton waved at Prudence with a smile on his face and Prudence looked away shyly, waving back. The hazel eyed boy watched the two as they walked to her mother’s mini-van and left the drive-way, disappearing down the street. Lucy pulled Calum inside, holding his hand tightly and the three other boys followed close behind them.
The couple sat on the couch, with the boys sitting on the couch next to it.
Calum gestured to his friends. “I hope its okay that I brought the guys along.”
Lucy smiled. “I don’t mind. The boys are always welcome here.”
“Hey,” Ashton spoke up, “Where was Prudence headed off to?” He scratched the back of his head, trying to play it off as a casual question.
“Why do you want to know?” Lucy wiggled her eyebrows at the curly haired boy questioningly.
Calum laughed. “He has a crush on your sister.”
“Aw!” Lucy squealed. “That is so cute!”
Ashton shook his head. “I don’t. I just think she’s a nice girl.”
“Sure.” Lucy grinned. “Well…if you really must know, Prudence went to the hospital with our mum.”
Luke’s demeanor in the way he thought about Prudence changed when he heard she went to the hospital. That was the magic word for most people, when people hear the word—hospital, the assumption that something is horribly wrong with the person is made. This was the case for Luke Hemmings and Ashton Irwin. For Calum and Michael, the words didn’t phase them. Their feelings were harder to penetrate, as they were both more guarded.
For Calum even, it took him more than just a few outings with Lucy for him to realize he was more than just attracted to her.
But not Luke, he had a more shy and emotional nature. “What’s wrong with her? Is she sick?” Luke asked, with genuine concern lining his words.
“Is she feeling okay?” Ashton added.
Lucy hesitated for a few seconds, her eyes growing bright with glittering tears, but she held them back for her sister’s sake. Prudence was dead set against anyone else knowing of her condition. She was grateful when she took a deep breath to steady her voice and the boys didn’t seem to notice. “She’s fine…” She gulped, “Its just a regular routine check-up. We get it every year around this time.”
Ashton cocked an eyebrow at her. He thought her response was strange. But he couldn’t pin point why that was.

At Sydney Medical Hospital Prudence Carrigan and her mother Martha sat in Dr. Robert’s office, awaiting something that they hoped would brighten their day.
The door opened slowly to reveal a tall man in a white doctor’s coat and medical gear. He held a manila folder in his left hand and the look on his face revealed the answer they were waiting for. He walked to his desk, in front of Prudence and Martha, looking at them sympathetically.
“What were the results of the test?” Martha asked, reaching across the mahogany desk and grabbed onto his arm, seeking reassurance.
She found none.
Coughing awkwardly to steady himself, he took a deep breath before saying to them, “The results are not good…”
