Guys help. I fell asleep at 3am last night and now I am falling asleep in class.

I badly want to take a nap, but I have to do so many things.

And I have to stay late for a school activity.

Honestly, someone save me. I feel like I may fall asleep any moment and like not wake up until tomorrow afternoon.

Anywa, enjoy this chapter.

I'm gonna go buy some lunch and hopefully that will wake me up.

[ six ] -- bad news

“I’m very sorry, Martha.” Dr. Robert began. “The treatment didn’t work on Prudence.”

“B-but,” Her mother’s lips quivered. “You said there was a very high chance of it working. Robert...I need this to work. Prudence needs to be okay.”

The doctor sighed, “I also explained to you that there was a small chance of failure. Her body is too weak now. It didn’t respond the way we expected to the medicine.”

Prudence could see the genuine sadness on his face. This was a man who had known her since she was a baby. He was his mother’s best and oldest friend. He had been with the Carrigan’s since he met Prudence’s dad in college.

He was there when Lucy and Prudence were born. He was even there when her father, Maxwell, passed away.

This man wasn’t just her doctor, he was part of her family.

Putting her bravest face on, for show, she let a tiny smile grace her lips. Swallowing hard before speaking, she asked the Lord for courage. She said, “Don’t worry uncle Bobby. God already has a plan set out for me. Its not something you should both be sad about. I know that when my body leaves the earth, my soul will be taken to paradise where I will live forever.”

“How much time does she have left?” Martha spoke up, after having stopped her sobbing for a second.

Seemingly trying his best to remain calm and composed, he replied, “I’m afraid Prudence has already entered the last stage of her leukemia…”

“How much longer will I live?” Prudence was the one asking this time.

“You have...four, maybe five months, at the most. You won’t make it past the New Year. I suggest living your life as best as you can. Getting regular exercise such as walking and eating healthy may prolong your life slightly longer.” He explained.

Martha broke out into tears once more.

Grabbing her mother’s hand in hers, she said soothingly. “Do not cry for me, mum. I know God will take me because it pains him to see my suffering. You, more than anyone, should already know that his plans for me have been set. I accept what he has chosen for me. Please, keep your faith in God, don’t lose it for my sake.”

Martha kissed her daughter’s hand. “I know it is the Lord’s will. But my biggest wish is to keep you around longer. I’ve already lost your father. Without you or Lucy, my life would be lost.”

“Don’t think that way, mum. You’d still have Lucy to care for and keep you company. Besides, I will always be alive as long as you have me in your heart.” She told her.

“Oi Lucy.”

Lucy tore her attention away from Calum to look at the curly haired blonde boy who had stood up from his seat on one of the living room couches. “Yeah?”

“Would you mind if I used your bathroom?” He asked her.

She shook her head. “Of course not, go right ahead.”

Ashton smiled nervously at her, still not moving.

“I think he wants you to tell him where it is. They’ve never been in th upstairs part of the house.” Calum laughed.

Lucy joined in with a giggle. Then she told him, “Um...so you go up the stairs and turn left. Its the very last door at the end of the hallway, you can’t miss it. That bathroom is right in between my room and Prudence’s. We share it and mum has the other one all to herself.”

“Thanks Lucy.” Ashton said and walked across the room to where the stair were.

"Don't you want her to walk you all the way there too?" Calum joked and the others laughed, including Ashton.

Along the walls of the staircase, he saw many decorative portraits of vases filled with bright colorful flowers. one of a majestic grand piano, with the same vase sitting atop of it, and the last was of a woman and a little girl dressed in eighteenth century clothes. The woman had an elbow propped on the grand piano as she seemed to be talking to the little girl who leaned on the piano seat playfully. The piano in the portrait was the same one from the previous portrait, with the same vase sitting on top of it.

When he got up the steps and walked down the hallway, he saw a few photographs on the walls.

Some were of two little girls smiling in the backyard of a house, each of them holding a doll in their hands. There was another where the two girls appeared with a man, who Ashton assumed was their father. And then there was a picture where two little girls appeared with a younger looking Mrs. Carrigan. Ashton smiled as he saw how happy little Prudence looked in those photos.

As he got farther down the hallway, he stopped. Looking around, he realized he didn’t remember Lucy’s instructions on how to get to the toilet.

He decided to take his chances and opened the first door on the right. There were only two other options anyway and one of them had to be the bathroom.

But upon pushing the door open, he realized it wasn’t the room he was looking for.

Rather, it seemed to be a bedroom.

He looked at the inside part of the door and read a word that seemed to be written out in glittery decorated foam letters.

Prudence.

He had stumbled into Prudence’s room.
