[ four ] -- arguments

Ashton stood at the doorway awkwardly, not really knowing what to do or say. He decided it would be best to head home. His mates would probably be worried. “I should go.” He said to Prudence and her family.

Prudence pulled away from her mum for a second and walked to the front door.

“Thank you so much.” She told him again, placing a soft hand on his shoulder. Ashton almost felt as if a jolt of electricity were surging through him with just the one touch.

He smiled warmly at her. “It was nothing, really. The boys and I all split up looking for you.” He lied. The only other one willing to look for Prudence was Luke, and even he wasn't too willing. Ashton had decided to use taking the trash out as an excuse to go look for the missing sixteen year old girl and he was relieved that he had found her in time.

Not really convinced that the other boys wanted to help her, she still smiled at the thought. Thinking of love, where there was an absence of it made her feel hopeful.

“I guess this is goodbye then.” She waved at him, starting to close the front door slowly.

Before the door fully closed, she saw a frown form on his face. He opened his mouth to speak and she opened the door wider. “What do you mean?” He seemed genuinely confused by her statement.

“You can go back to pretending I don’t exist. Or you can make fun of me tomorrow like your friends do. I don't mind. Their jokes can't get to me because I am under the protection of the Lord.” She stated, referring to the way the other boys had been treating her since the very first moment they met her.

Without letting him utter any words of protest, she closed the door on him.

Prudence turned to see her mother in scolding mode and she stood there, waiting for what her mother wanted to say. “Prudence, you shouldn’t have done that.” Her mum began.

“You scared us.” Lucy added, equally upset at the sixteen year old.

Her mum continued, “What you did was reckless. Something could have happened to you!”

Prudence sighed, “Please don’t scold me, mum…I’m tired.”

She took a few steps forward, about to walk past her mother and sister when suddenly everything started spinning around her. Prudence lost her balance and fell forward, nearly falling to the ground roughly but her mum caught her in her arms.

“Prudence!” Her mum cried, holding her tightly.

Her eyes were shut and her mum knew this was a result of the rapid deterioration of her health.

Ashton opened the front door to the house he was sharing with his four band mates and walked inside casually. Although there was a quiet, somber demeanor in the way he walked and shut the door, his mates didn't notice.

Michael and Calum were playing video games, particularly FIFA and Luke came into the living room with a bowl of popcorn and a two litre bottle of soda.

Upon seeing Ashton, he nodded in his direction. “Where have you been?”

“He went to throw the trash out.” Michael replied absently.

“An hour ago?” Luke questioned, his eyebrows raised questioningly.

Calum then paused the video game and wiped his tired eyes with the backs of his hands. His eyes widened as realization struck him. “Has it really been an hour? I felt like a few minutes have gone by since he left.”

“I ran into Prudence when I went to take the trash out.” He told them, not really willing to say he went out to look for her. He knew telling them would result in endless teasing.

“What was the nun doing outside at this hour?” Michael asked, he sounded actually intrigued to know what possessed the conservative teenage girl to be wandering the streets at odd hours of the night.

Calum said jokingly, “Maybe she was out looking for black cats and newborn babies to use for her crazy rituals.”

“This is serious, boys.” Ashton cut in before Michael could add another one of his nasty comments about her. “She was walking back home from church group, that’s like an hour away from here on foot!” He exclaimed. “When I found her, she was getting attacked by some disgusting old guy outside the bar on the corner of the street.” He explained to them, his face had a look of sympathy for the poor girl.

The three of his band mates laughed. “You must be kidding.” Luke said, grabbing a handful of popcorn after plopping down on the couch and stuffing it into his mouth.

“Someone tried to take Prudence? I don’t believe you.” Michael laughed even harder.

“Whoever he was, he must’ve been pretty drunk.” Calum said, nudging Michael who was sitting next to him and a wave of laughter washed over them once more.

As anger bubbled up inside him, Ashton said to his friends. “She’s not even ugly at all. Yeah, she dresses a bit like she’s from some other century and she’s a bit too skinny and tad bit pale, but I think she looks better than Lucy.”

That seemed to have stricken a nerve in Calum.

“Hey, lay off Lucy." Calum said, pointing an index finger at Ashton. "Lucy is beautiful, and smart, and normal. Prudence is just annoying and weird.” He said.

“She’s a nice girl, stop fucking judging her. You don’t even know her!” By then, Ashton was now on his feet and towering over his bandmate who remained seated on the couch. His large hands gripped the fabric of Calum’s shirt menacingly.

“Don’t tell me what to do!” Calum yelled back through gritted teeth.

“Why don’t I let my fist tell your face what to do?” Ashton growled.

While the two shot each other death glares, Luke got up from his spot on the other couch and pried them apart. Standing in between the two, “Calum, Ash, stop. What the fuck are you doing?” He told them sternly.

“We never fight.” Michael added, now having gotten up from his seat on the couch as well.

And it was true.

Ever since the beginning of the band, sure they had their petty arguments once in a while, but they ended up laughing it off a minute later and everything got fixed. Besides, those arguments usually revolved around who ate the last slice of pizza? Or Where is my Led Zeppelin shirt? Nothing had ever gotten as serious or as close to chucking fists at each other as it was now. And it was all happening...over a girl.

Ashton ran a hand through his curly hair and sighed in frustration. “It just pisses me off that you all judge Prudence so easily without giving the chance to get to know her. I thought you three hated being judged. Well, now that you're on the other side, why don't you consider how you felt when things were being said about you.” He reminded them.

“How about you, huh? Have you gotten to know her?” Calum asked with a mocking smirk. “Is that what it is, Ashton? Do you like the nun?”
