[ ten ] -- crying or praying

When the door shut behind her and she made sure it was locked, the first sob tore through her. The first one is always the hardest

It always feels like on is being ripped apart by an unseen force.

Then the tears stream down and the sobs get louder.

Prudence threw herself on her bed and covered her face with her hands, hoping to muffle the sound, but it was too late. Someone had already heard her crying.

Luke walked down the hallway, having just left the bathroom when he heard it. At first, it was loud, but it immediately went quiet. Someone was crying. By knowing Lucy and the other boys were downstairs, Luke was able to conclude that the person who was crying was a sixteen year old girl.

It was Prudence.

He stood on the other side of the door where he heard the crying and knocked gently.

The crying immediately stopped.

From where he stood, he could hear footsteps, rushing around the room and he wondered if she was hiding something. A minute later, the door opened slowly and he saw the surprise in her gray eyes. “May I help you?” She asked him with a sniffle when she saw the blue eyed boy standing out in the dimly lit hallway.

There were so many things that didn’t seem right about the whole situation.

For one, her eyes looked like they had been crying. Her face was red and blotchy and she wasn’t wearing her regular old knitted sweater. Instead, she wore a blue hoodie that contrasted heavily with the light color of her skirt. Luke seemed to notice every single detail easily.

“I heard crying.” He replied, watching her closely with his sea blue eyes. “I just wanted to make sure everything was okay.”

“You must have been hearing things,” She lied, starting to feel slightly nervous. “I wasn’t crying.” She hardly ever lied, but she thought it was better to lie to him right now. If he had come to tease her, she didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing her in tears.

One thing Luke noticed about Prudence was that she wasn’t very good at lying.

He pointed out. “But...your eyes, they’re telling me they’ve seen you cry.”

She sighed, commenting on his observation. “That is a beautiful way of putting it. But no, I was not crying. I was praying. And I-”

He interrupted her with a chuckle. “That was some weird praying then.”

She cracked a smile for the first time that day, easing up to his presence. She thought that maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t here to taunt her or make fun of her for once. Luke felt as if his heart were being filled with warmth when he saw that smile.

He even had to shake his head slightly to clear his thoughts. “Well then, I must have been hearing things.” He said, though he was certain she had been crying. All the signs were there. Her eyes seemed to have been watered over and were slightly red. He knew crying when he saw it. It wasn’t easy to hide.

A feeling of guilt arose in the pit of his stomach at a thought that crossed his mind.

What if she had been crying because of the way he and the boys were treating her?

He knew he had disliked her before, but now, seeing her so fragile made his heart hurt. He knew that if he were in her place, with a group of people bullying him, he would probably cry too.

When the awkward silence became too much for Prudence to bear, she began to shut her bedroom door. Just as it was inches from meeting the doorframe, Luke stuck his foot in between to stop her from closing the door on him. “May I come in?” He asked.

She shook her head, still trying to close the door on him. “My mum wouldn’t like it if I were alone in my room with a boy. Especially a boy I just met.”

Luke groaned in frustration and pushed the door open. Prudence stepped to the side with wide eyes. “Why do you push everyone away, Prudence?”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m busy.”

Her eyes wouldn’t meet his.

She couldn’t look him in the eyes.

“Bullshit.”

“Language!” She scolded him.

“Sorry.” He apologized with an awkward cough. Then he asked her again. “Tell me why you push everyone away. Why do you push me away? I just wanted to help you.”

She sighed, “Luke...I’ve told Ashton this and I will tell you too. I know you and the other boys don’t like me, you made it very clear since day one. So you don’t have to feel obligated to come here and pretend to be nice to me. Don’t feign concern for someone if you don’t really feel it. God wouldn’t like that.” She told him. Despite the harshness in her choice of words, everything she told him sounded beautiful and polite.

He was in a daze and she noticed this, taking it as an opportunity to push him back gently. He let her and she shut the door. There was a click that followed, indicating she locked her door.

He stood there and said in a low voice. “I wasn’t pretending to be concerned.”

Just then, footsteps turned the corner and Luke was met with his mate Michael. “Lucas! What are you doing up here? The lads and I were looking for you.”

Wrapping an arm around Luke’s shoulders, Michael practically dragged him back down the stairs.
