[ twenty one ] winning over 'the nun'
It was half past midnight when Ashton returned Prudence back to her home.
But they had been having so much fun that they didn't even notice it go dark outside, much less did they notice what time it was.
When she opened the door, they both saw Mrs. Carrigan standing there, arms crossed over her chest and on her face was a look of anger. She took one look at the both of them and pulled Prudence inside, shutting the door in Ashton's face.
"You didn't even let me say goodbye to him." Prudence protested.
Her mother shook her head. "I was worried about you. You could have at least called to say you were okay."
The sixteen year old nodded with a sigh. "You're right mum. I'm sorry. Its just that we were having so much fun that we ended up losing track of time."
"And you didn't even take your medecine today." Mrs. Carrigan added.
Prudence replied, "I think it won't make a difference if I take my medecine or not. God has already decided when my journey will end. You seem to forget that the gift of medecine and the knowledge he has blessed you with should not be used against his will and his wishes."
Martha's eyes softened.
"Its just so hard to accept God's will when he wants to take you away from me."
Prudence shook her head. "He's not taking me away from you. He's taking me back to his kingdom, where all his children belong. When he takes me into his glory, I will no longer suffer. I will bask in paradise for the rest of eternity. Think of it this way, mum. Its like that beautiful hymn we learned the other day at the youth group. Let it be my consolation, that their love was given for me to borrow, and that God has sent for them to return to his Kingdom."

Before arriving back at his house, he had to stop at the nearest market to buy some foods. It was his alibi as to what he had done all day. But he had no idea how to explain why he had taken so long.
He opened the front door to reveal his three best mates in the living room.
He had hoped they were already asleep, but knowing them, it would have been too good to be true.
Luke and Michael glared at their bandmate, while Calum had a smirk on his face. "Went to the grocery store, hm?"
"For seven hours." Michael hissed.
"Yeah," Ashton nodded, "I...went to different stores because I couldn't find my favorite...grapes."
"Don't try to fool us, Ashton." Luke told him.
"We know you took the nun out." Calum added, seemingly amused. "Lucy told me."
"Fucking Lucy." Ashton muttered under his breath. He let out a sigh of defeat, walking over and setting the brown bag of groceries on the coffee table. "Okay, yes. I took Prudence out. But it has nothing to do with your stupid contest. I took her out because she was upset and I thought she needed some cheering up."
Michael shook his head. "We weren't born yesterday. There's no way we'll swallow that lie. You were trying to win her over."
"I wasn't." Ashton protested.
"It looks like Ashton got a head-start, boys." Calum joked.
Ashton huffed angrily. "You three are disgusting."

The next morning, Michael wasn't taking any chances.
He walked to Prudence's house, which was only a couple of blocks away and knocked on her front door.
Lucy answered it, still in her pajamas. She yawned, "Michael? What are you doing here at eight in the morning?"
"The boys and I are going to play football at the park later and I wanted to personally come to invite Prudence." He replied with a grin.
Stepping out of the way, she yawned again. "That isn't for a few more hours, but come on it."
"Thanks Lu." Michael patted her on the shoulder and walked past her to go up the stairs.
When he got to her door, he was surprised to hear someone playing a piano on the other side. It was an unfamiliar, yet beautiful tune. And he paused, before knocking on her door. He wanted to hear more of this new song.
"Close the door,
come and sit near,
that your eyes have told me
that they've seen you cry,
fill two cups
with memories of stories,
your hands still shake
if you hear me talk"
He heard her angelic voice and he couldn't believe it was Prudence. When Lucy had told Ashton that Prudence had a bone-shilling classical sound, he had never expected her to be so good. He thought Lucy was just saying that because Prudence was her sister.
In a daze, he finally let his fist come into contact with her door.
The singing and music immediately stopped. There was a shuffling heard inside the room and she opened the door for him moments later.
The surprise on her face was unmistakeable. "Michael? What are you doing here so early?"
"Uh...I was just wondering if you wanted to come to the park with the boys and I again? We're going to play some football and I'd love it if you could sing for m- I mean, cheer for me." He told her.
"Were you listening to me sing?" She asked him suspiciously.
He shook his head quickly. "No. I just got here. So, are you coming or not?"
"Erm, sure. I'd love to." She smiled at him.
Soon, he turned to walk away and she closed the door behind him. She couldn't understand the sudden change in Michael, but she hoped it was for the best.
Closing the door to her room, she walked over to her bedside and knelt down on the wooden floor. Performing the sign of the cross, she looked up at the ceiling, "Thank you for softening up Michael's heart, Lord. And please, do the same for Calum. I know they're good guys. Thank you."
