[ thirty four ] princess prudence
"That was a delicious treat." Prudence smiled at him as they walked out of Starbucks.
On the way back to his car, which was at the far end of the parking structure, they passed a woman and her small daughter who sat at a bench, waiting for the bus to arrive. "Look mommy, an angel." The little girl pointed at Prudence.
"Its not polite to point, sweetie." Her mother told her.
Michael smiled. "She is beautiful, isn't she?"
Prudence blushed, tilting her head down in embarrassment. "Thank you, but I'm no angel. I'm just an ordinary girl."
"You more than ordinary." Michael insisted.
The little girl took one look at Michael and crinkled up her nose. "Is he your boyfriend?" She pointed at him. "He looks too...punky. And his clothes are too dark. You look like you could date a Prince."
"Angeline!" Her mother scolded. Looking at the two teenagers, who had long since paused in their path, she apologized. "I'm sorry if she's bothering you. My daughter tends to be a bit of a blabbermouth sometimes. But she means well."
Prudence shook her head reassuringly, a warm smile on her lips. "Don't worry. I'm sure Michael didn't take offense to anything she said. She's only a little girl."
With her hand placed on his shoulder, he stammered nervously. "Y-yeah."
"I just love children." Prudence told them. She bent down in front of the little girl until they were at eyelevel with each other. "Its nice to meet you, Angeline. My name is Prudence. And this is one of my very best friends. His name is Michael." She gestured to the boy who stood next to her.
"You talk like a princess." Angeline giggled, delighted.
Michael chuckled, doing the same as Prudence and joining the conversation. "She is the most beautiful princess."
"And are you a Prince?" The little girl asked Michael.
"N-" He started.
But Prudence cut him off. "He sure is. Michael comes from a land very far away where people listen to his music and dress punk rock."
"But he's not dressed like a prince." The little girl pointed out.
"Sure he is." Prudence nodded with a smile. "In five sauce land, what he's wearing is the formal attire. Just because he isn't dressed like a mainstream prince, doesn't make him any less royal. People shouldn't be judged by what they wear, but rather how they behave. And I know for a fact that Michael is a great prince."
"You're so pretty and nice." Angeline gushed. "When I grow up, I wanna be just like you."
To her right, she saw Michael snapping a picture of her with the little girl.
He posted it on his twitter.

They arrived at her house in the afternoon and after he helped her take the groceries inside, they both decided to get some things on the list done.
She handed him the list and he grinned when he saw it, his index finger automatically landing on number seventy-four.
74. Kiss in the rain.
