[ eleven ] -- new clothes?

The four boys and Lucy sat around in the living room, bored out of their minds.

“We should go do something.” Michael said, “We can’t just spend our entire holiday here at Lucy’s house.”

“I can.” Calum said, winking at Lucy who let out a giggle.

Ashton nodded, “Michael’s right. We should go watch a movie or something.”

“Yes!” Lucy said. “I hear there’s this really good one.”

She went on to explain the details of the movie to the boys, without giving too much away. Soon, they were all  excited to go.

They were almost out the door when Luke remembered seeing Prudence sad earlier. He knew he and his friends were at fault and wanted to make it up to her. He paused in the doorway. “Why don’t we invite Prudence?” He asked his friends.

“That’s a great idea.” Ashton grinned.

Michael and Calum broke out into a fit of laughter. Calum joked, “Nuns don’t go to the movies, Ashton.”

Ashton narrowed his hazel eyes at his two band mates.

He was about to snap at them when Luke interrupted with a calmer thought. “Even if she says she can’t come, I think its the polite thing to do. We should at least invite her. I can go ask her right now.”

“No.” Ashton said, stepping forward. “I’ll go. She seems to trust me more.”

Lucy shook her head in disapproval.

“Its not that I don’t want her to come along, but...she has to go somewhere with mum later tonight. Its something really important and she can’t put it off for another day.” Lucy faked a smile, even though on the inside, she was constantly worried about her sister’s rapidly deteriorating health. “We’ll invite her when we go out next time.”

Curiosity got the best of Ashton. “Where will she go?”

Lucy mentally slapped herself for not having seen this coming. She had just assumed they wouldn’t want to know where Prudence would be tonight. “She...uh...She’s going clothes shopping with mum."

Michael laughed, clearly amused. “So she’ll finally be wearing something else besides her old knitted sweater?” Calum quickly joined in on the laughing.

Now it was Lucy’s turn to glare at them.

“You two should be ashamed. You don’t even know my sister, yet you judge her and tease her relentlessly. She wears that knitted sweater every day because our dad gave it to her just a few days before he passed away.” Lucy explained, a tear rolling down her cheek.

The smirks were instantly wiped off their faces.

Ashton said, trying to break the tension in the room. “I’m going up there to invite her anyway. I want her to feel included with us.”

Then he went up the steps.

Prudence lifted her eyes from her bible when she heard a knock on the door.

She hoped it wasn’t the blue eyed boy from earlier. He had overheard her crying and now she felt as though she wouldn’t be able to face him for a couple of days.

Getting up from her bed, she walked to her door slowly and opened it to reveal a pair of hazel eyes which belonged to a curly haired young man. A smile broke out onto his face, exposing his set of dimples when he saw her.

“Hey.”

It was inevitable for him to stop smiling whenever she was around and he couldn’t understand why that was.

He felt as if the corners of his mouth were being pulled in opposite directions by a unseen force.

A small smile graced her lips. “Hello, Ashton. May I help you?”

He shook his head, “I just wanted to let you know the boys, Lucy, and I are going to the movies and I was wondering if you wanted to come along.”

Hazel eyes watched her face intently, waiting for an answer. She seemed to think it over for several seconds before replying. “As much as the offer is tempting, I’d rather not go. But thank you for inviting me.”

Ashton frowned. “Why not?”

“Well, for one,” She began, “Your friends don’t like me very much. And secondly, I have some errands to run with my mum later. But thanks, Ashton.”

Her smile seemed to get bigger.

“Maybe next time.” Ashton nodded.

But she said nothing and closed her bedroom door.

As Ashton pulled out of the driveway, he could see the sillouhette of a girl sitting before a piano. He knew it was Prudence.

“I didn’t know Prudence was musically gifted.” Ashton commented.

Although he did know. That day he was snooping in her room, he remembered seeing a keyboard piano and a guitar.

Lucy nodded, “Yeah, Prudence has always been into music. She can play the guitar and the piano, but what is most amazing about her is her voice. She has this really...bone chilling classical sound. Its beautiful. You should listen to her sometime. She sings at the church on Sundays.”

“She’s even dorkier than you told us, Cal.” Michael said.

“I’d love to hear her sing.” Ashton replied to Lucy.

When he got to the stop sign down the street, he saw a familiar mini van going in the direction opposite of them. He knew it was Prudence’s mum. Ashton sighed in relief. At least she wasn’t lying about going somewhere with her mum and she wouldn’t be staying home alone tonight.

A fire of determination grew in him.

He was determined to do everything to gain her trust and her friendship.
