[ thirteen ] -- blood red skyes

-

I know this one's super short.

I just have a lot to do today.

Guys, I am freaking out. I have my meeting with my advisor today and I've been doing bad in her online course. I don't want to face her.

But I have to.

Anyway, enjoy the chapter.

Thank you for the support.

His eyes studied her closely.

The food on her plate had remained untouched since he'd joined them. He didn't know if her mother noticed or if she was ignoring the fact that her daughter wasn't eating.

With a sigh, he finally decided to ask, maybe then his curiousity would be calmed.

"Prudence, is something wrong?" Hazel eyes met blue-gray ones. "You haven't touched your food and you look pale."

Tearing her gaze from the tray of food that seemed to be getting bigger and bigger with french fries, she shook her head absently, quickly thinking of a reasonable excuse to give the curly haired boy. "All the walking just made me tired. My blood sugar is probably just low."

Concern immediately lined his features, "Then you need to eat something before you feel worse."

"No, no." She shook her head. "I'll feel better in a few minutes."

"Mrs. Carrigan," Ashton turned towards Martha with pleading eyes, "This isn't normal. Please tell me Prudence is alright."

He watched as her eyes glazed over with tears and her lip quivered, but she held back with all her strength. After taking a deep breath to calm herself, she explained to Ashton, "Prudence has never had a great condition for walking around a long time. She gets very dehydrated and tired easily."

His eyes narrowed as he looked from Prudence to Martha, seemingly not convinced.

He was certain this had to be a lie. He knew for a fact that Prudence had walked home from church that one time and she didn't look nearly as ill as she did now.

There was silence between the two when Ashton went to pick up his food.

Martha didn't agree with lying to the boy, since he genuinely seemed to care for Prudence, but her daughter didn't want anyone to know. It was only up to Prudence to tell people of her condition.

When he returned with a tray of warmed fast food, Prudence forced herself to eat.

She didn't want Ashton to become suspicious.

She picked up a french fry in her trembling, cold fingers and brought it to her lips. Before it even entered her mouth, she could feel a gag coming, but she supressed it.

Ashton began to eat immediately, as if he hadn't ate in ages.

Still, his eyes were trained on her, making sure she got some food into her system.

A few fries had made its way down her throat when her gag reflex was triggered and she felt the food coming back up.

"Excuse me." She said, with a hand over her mouth.

She pushed back her chair and ran in the direction of the nearest toilet, which was to the left of the registers. Ashton watched her disappear past a gray colored door with worry evident in his eyes. He knew there was something wrong with her, but he couldn't figure out what it was.

In the safety of the toilets, she locked herself in one of the cubicles and let the contents of her stomach spill into the toilet bowl.

She coughed and wheezed, tears rolling down her face.

"Please, Lord. Have mercy with me." She pleaded, her eyes avoided whatever was inside the toilet.

It took her several minutes to compose herself, but she finally got back on her feet. Her hand reached out to flush the toilet and she saw what little food she had eaten that day, but what shocked her most was that it was mixed with tinges of crimson.

She is shaky and afraid, she flushed it and hurried to clean herself up before going back outside. This time, she didn't even attempt to eat, no matter what Ashton would think.

When she caught him staring at her, she forced a smile onto her face.

But that smile was hiding a crippling fear in Prudence.
