She was crouched by a fallen log in the woods, her senses on high alert as she looked around for it, her movement measured and calculated. Once she saw it, she zeroed in and with light steps, approached it slowly. She grabbed her gun from her leg holster and slowly but quietly placed the silencer on, cautious with her movements.

When it was in her line of sight, she raised her gun and pointed it carefully, cocking it as she placed her forefinger on the trigger.

Just one shot and--

"MAINE!"

Startled by the call of her name, she shot her gun with her aim becoming far off and watched in frustration as the hare she was aiming for hopped quickly away.

Rolling her eyes and throwing her hands in the air, she turned around and screamed, "RICHARD?! WHAT THE HELL??!"

Richard came bounding down the hilly slopes towards where she was, stopping in front of her with a silly grin on his face, his deep dimple peeking through. She rolled her eyes again and huffed. She could never stay mad at him for too long.

Not with that adorable five year old silly looking face. Ugh!

"What are you doing here?" he asked, slightly breathless from running. She didn't answer but instead just looked at him with a brow raised, arms crossing across her chest.

"Look what my traps got!" he excitedly continued, not even letting her answer his previous question, showing her a bunch of fat-looking hares. She was suddenly reminded of why she got mad at him in the first place. "I didn't think the traps would work. But it's only been two days and look! I already got four!"

"Well, congratulations to you," she muttered under her breath as she put her gun back into her holster. She started to walk back towards the clearing, wanting to suddenly get away from the woods, noting that it was almost dusk. She would just try and see if she could spot some greens on the way home and tell her mother to make a salad out of it or something.

A hot, steaming rabbit stew would be really nice right now, though.

She unconsciously licked her lips as she glanced at the hares that Richard was stuffing in his duffel bag before quickly sidling up to her.

Especially with this kind of weather.

She glanced up and noticed how grey the skies were becoming.

It's going to snow soon. And then the hares would be hibernating. Goodbye rabbit stew.

She frowned and walked even quicker, stopping every now and then to pick some herbs and greens that she found along the way.

Life was hard where they were living. Especially when the world apocalypse happened - the planets lining up causing the earth's gravitational pull to elevate, prompting the tectonic plates under vast continents to move and break, leaving most of the world in shambles with only a few surviving nations.

With jus a little bit of technology left that survived, the world was practically thrown back to the Middle Ages - where everything was primitive once more and survival of the fittest was the name of the game.

Maine was a great hunter, a sharp shooter who never misses. She was always called on by the government, or whatever that was left of it, to do the occasional job for them as needed. Richard, on the other hand, was Maine's childhood friend and the only person who could break through her barriers.

And the only one resilient enough to do so.

"So, Maine. What were you doing a while ago?" Richard asked again, trying to get her to talk to him. "You were so quiet, I didn't even know you were in here too."
