She was outside, standing in the middle of the cold, icy woods behind their home, practicing - her hands moving in a way where the snow around her danced. She smiled as she flicked her right hand and with an incantation, the snow around her stopped falling midway, before falling back to the ground when she flicked her hand once more.
She continued with her flicking and flailing, her arms and fingers moving as she muttered spell after spell under her breath to make the snow and ice around her frolic in the air gracefully - like a dance performance where the dancers were made of ice and snow.
She was about to start a new charm, her lips about to chant the start of a spell, when all of a sudden - a bright, orange light like fire appeared before her with words suddenly forming quickly.
Meet me tonight.
When the moon is bright.
I'll wait for you.
At the same place we always do.And just as sudden as the message appeared, it quickly dissolved into thin air, removing any trace that it was even there.
She smiled wider and giggled giddily as she anticipated what was to come, forgetting about what she was supposed to be doing.
"Dei! Dei! Are you out here? Are you done with your lessons for the day?"
She turned around and answered back. "Yes, mother! I'll be right in at once!"
"Good! Supper is almost ready and your father wants to hear about your latest enchantment. Come on right in and wash up once you're done."
She didn't answer anymore as she trudged slowly back to their humble abode. Though the happy grin on her face never left.
I can't wait either.
Richard.
My love. My life.
//
He was pacing back and forth at the edge of the icy lake where the border of his clan was, his orange and brown hunting tunic swaying in the cool night wind. The moon was full and bright tonight and like always, he was giddily but agitatedly waiting for her to come in sight.
She's late. He thought as he continued to pace, one hand on his waist, the other raking through his already mussed-up hair.
She's never been late. Could her father have found us out? He worried himself as he scrunched his brows, groaning as he tried to remember if he sent his message right. Or maybe my spell wasn't right and my message didn't reach her. But I always do it right! I've never failed yet!
He stopped pacing though when he heard fast but timid footsteps approaching, the rustling of leaves and branches echoing in the stillness of the night. He breathed a sigh of relief, however, when he saw her bright blue and white fur coat, her brown hair shining in the moonlight, her golden brown eyes dancing with mirth and excitement.
"Dei," he marveled just as she reached him and engulfed her in his arms. "You're here."
"Of course, I'm here, silly," she chuckled as she returned his embrace. "I received your fire message. I wouldn't miss seeing you even if our clans started another war."
He frowned, turning serious as he released her and gently held her by the shoulders at arms length. "That is not something you jest about, Dei. I wouldn't want to anger the Ice Chief any more than I would anger my father."
She sobered immediately and meekly sought out his arms again, her head resting on his chest as her own arms wound around his waist. "I know that, Richard. It's just that --" she sighed deeply, "I wish our fathers would just get along. This... hiding behind their backs is getting tiresome."
"Are you getting tired of me, my love?"
"Richard!" she scolded, hitting him lightly on his chest as she looked up at him, making him chuckle, his deep dimple suddenly appearing on his left cheek. "I will never get tired of you. Never! But I would like to proudly showcase to everyone that the prince of the Fire Clan is mine."
He smiled as she said that, his arms around her tightening even more. "I love you, Dei. You know that, right? No matter what happens."
"And I love you, Richard," she whispered just as he placed a hand on her chin to tilt her head up, both of them gazing into each other's eyes lovingly. "In this life or the next."
He then swooped down and captured her lips with his, sealing their promise with a searing kiss.
//
They might not know about what would happen tomorrow - if they would finally be found out. Or if the clans would suddenly break out into a fight. Or if there might be a sudden miracle of peace between everyone.
But tonight...
At least, even just tonight...
Tonight was theirs.
