The days lingered, time passing as it does. Jess sat at his desk, everyday, typing up prompts and sketches. This job required so much of him. Jess was now writing long stories and typing up thousands of letters and essays. Rebecca often called, and found many reasons to come over. Jess knew. He knew he had to tell her that he had a wife; it had been 2 months now. The time never felt right, Rebecca was always so kind...

"Whatcha working on?" Rebecca skipped up behind Jess, peering over the computer screen.

"Just...finishing...up." Jess answered, continuing to type.

"It it the essay for boss man?" Rebecca flicked her hair and sat next to Jess. "You should take a break."

"Becca, I'm almost done. Give me a second."

Rebecca frowned and scampered off to the other room, like an agitated bunny.

Jess pressed save, then his computer lit up. It was Rory. He pressed answer, temporarily forgetting that Rebecca was in the other room. "Hey, sweetheart." Jess's heart felt warm when he saw an almost 1 year old Haeven in his wife's lap.

"I miss you, honey." Rory said this every time they Skyped. And every time she meant it more and more.

"You know I miss you, too."

"How's work?"

"Good, actually. I'm starting on-" Before Jess could finish, Rebecca came walking over.

"Who are you talking to Jess?"

Rory's eyes widened and Jess looked ambivalent.

"This is Rory," Jess motioned and turned the laptop toward her. "My wife."

Rory waved, and smiled flakily. "I'm the wife."

"Oh," Rebecca just sighed. "Anyway, Jess. It's almost time to go in. Hanns is waiting."

"Oh, right," Jess turned to Rory. "I guess I should go."

Rory just grinned. "Bye."

Rory was not amused. She grabbed her phone and dialed up her mom.

"Hello?" A cheery, buoyant voice was heard on the other end.

"Hey, mom." Rory's voice sounded laid back and bleak.

"You okay, kid?"

"Yeah. Um. I have a question."

"Shoot."

"Do you think I was right in giving up so easily?"

Lorelai questioned this. "What do you mean?"

"With Jess," Rory took in a breath and continued. "I never fought for him to stay...I just let him go to Sacramento..."

"You couldn't make that decision for him, hun."

"No, mom. I don't mean that I let him. I know I don't control what he does. I just didn't fight hard enough for him to stay."

"Do you think he's happy where he is?" Lorelai asked.

"Yes. I do, I think he loves it. He has this partner, this co-worker." In saying this, Rory cringed.

"Oh."

"What do you mean, oh?"

"I mean, 'Oh, so that's what this is about.' "

"Mom..."

Even though she couldn't see her, Rory could tell her mom was smiling. "Rory...," She mocked. "You're jealous."

"Mom!" Rory complained. "I am not!"

"Okay, Elle Woods." Lorelai smirked.

"Mom, I'm gonna hang up."

"Aww, hun. I'm just kidding."

"It's not funny."

"Lighten up. Look, Jess is your husband. He's not going to do anything stupid. 10 years ago I would have had my doubts, but now I'm certain he'll stay loyal to you. Rory, I've seen the way he looks at you, I've seen the diamonds that shimmer in her eyes when you're around him. I've noticed how exultant he is just being close to you. Trust me, he's never gonna give you up."

Rory paused. "He's my true Rick Astley."

"That's the truth."

"Thank you mom."

"You're welcome, babe. Have a nice night. Don't worry about him."

*****

"She seems nice." Rebecca walked around Jess and sat on his leather couch.

"She is." Jess tried to ignore the advances Rebecca was trying to make.

Rebecca leaned in awfully close to Jess and seemed to whisper. "You know she's not here," She leaned in even more, grabbing Jess's attention. "But I am, and we could...make this work. She'd never know." She winked and walked out, her hips swaying from side to side in order to keep Jess focused. "Bye, Jess." Rebecca waved and winked.

Jess sighed and rested his head on the desk. "Rebecca, wait!" He called out.

The young, exuberant woman ran back into the room. "Yes?"

"No."

Rebecca quivered her eyebrows. "What?"

"I'm not interested in you any more than friends," Jess stood up. "I'm sorry, but I'm married. It was wrong of you to suggest anything."

Rebecca just stood, completely dumbfounded. "Just you wait." She flipped her hair like a 13 year old does when she's part of a click.

Jess sighed. These two years would not go fast enough.
