Summary: Your parents had been a part of the Circle and after their death, you'd joined, living within the ranks of the Institute until the day finally comes when you have to betray everyone you love, including your boyfriend, Alec.
"Where are you going?" Alec asks, winding his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. I inhale sharply, my skin tingling as he presses a kiss to my cheek.
"I got a transfer to Idris."
"W-what?" Alec frowns, pulling away. He turns me by my shoulders to face him, "Y-you're kidding, right?" he laughs nervously.
I shake my head.
"Well, I'll talk to my mother – get it revoked," he says quickly, heading for the door. I pull him back by the arm, "I put the request in," I say quietly. He narrows his eyes.
"Why?"
His face was filled with a sudden confusion, "Because of Jace?"
"Yes, because of Jace," I say – it wasn't completely untrue, "Valentine took him while he was with me, Alec. I couldn't even protect him."
"You tried," he says.
I didn't. It was why I had to leave now. Before they rescued Jace and everyone found out.
"Not hard enough," I sigh, walking to my wardrobe and tossing a bundle of clothes into my suitcase, "Everyone's looking at me funny."
"Tensions are just high," he tried to reassure me, "Everyone just wants him back and hey-" he says, taking my hands in his when I turn away, "There's no way we can find him without you. You're the best at the Institute – you have been since we were kids – that doesn't change just because you made a mistake."
My thoughts wander back to memories of growing up with Alec, Izzy and Jace – they'd become my family so quickly. How could I leave them behind now?
I knew I hadn't done the right thing but there was no changing it.
I pull my hands out of his, zipping up the suitcase, "I'll send for the rest of my stuff," I say.
"Y/N," he frowns, "I won't be able to see you if you're in Idris. How – how can I not see you every day?" he mumbles, resting a hand on my cheek, "I love you – distance won't change that – but I can't lie, not being able to kiss you-" he trails a finger over your lips, "And hold you-"
"Alec, stop," I say, pressing a hand against his chest as he wraps his arms around me. He reluctantly let's go.
"Once I'm in Idris, I don't think you and I should... stay together."
"You're breaking up with me?"
He was almost laughing, "That's ridiculous," he scoffs, "Just because Idris is far away it doesn't mean we have to break up," he rolls his eyes, picking up a paper weight and tossing it up in the air. As it comes down and lands in his palm, he smiles at me, "That's why portals exist."
"You don't get it, Alec," I sigh. His willingness to do whatever it takes for us to stay together only made everything harder.
"I want to break up," I say, trying to keep a hardened expression as he frowns, his eyes becoming bloodshot.
"No," he shakes his head. A few tears escape his eyes and he wipes them away with the back of his hand, "Wha – no!" he says in disbelief, "I get you're going through a hard time – but you don't need to punish yourself by pushing my away."
I run my fingers through my hair, picking up my suitcase with one hand, "It's over, Alec."
I could hear him bounding down the hallway after me but I keep walking, faster and faster until we're in the main control centre, hoping he won't make a scene in front of so many people.
