Laurens's POV

I was around the back of the tent, cooking over the fire. I sang softly, a little louder than I normally would. The cooking tent was farther away from the other tents because the smoke from the fire would choke the other soldiers. I was cooking the fish that Hercules would bring up from the stream.
"Un deux trois quatre cinq six sept huit neuf~" I sang as I added more wood to the fire.
"There's that lovely singing voice that I missed~!" I heard someone chuckle, walking up to the area. I jumped and looked at Hercules, coming with more fish. I smiled and relaxed.
"Awe, Herc, you always say the nicest things!" I giggled and dusted my vest off. He sat the fish down, still in the net, then came over to me and gave me a hug.
"Is this what they have you do all day now?" I asked tilting my head.
"Only when we aren't being attack." He laughed. I giggled a bit as he let go.
"Hopefully this isn't what they stick you with for the rest of the time." He said, sighing.
"It's only for now, until I'm completely healed or until I decide I'm okay enough to go back on the field... Having a hurt shoulder and trying to brandish a gun just sounds like a recipe for disaster." I told him, seeing how upset he was about my injuries. He puts his hands in his hips and was looking out at the woods beyond the camp. I hugged him around his waist since I was so short and stretched up on my toes to give him a small reassuring but friendly kiss on the cheek. I would usually do this to him, he didn't mind it. He looked at me and smiled, blushing and he relaxed. I could see the worry start to leave his face.
"Thanks John... I feel better now." He said in a calm, sweet tenor.
"I think that's enough fish for today, that's the third net you've brought me today." I laughed. He nodded and unrolled his sleeves.
"I'm going to go see if there's anything else Washington wants me to do." He said, patting me on the head before walking to the General's tent. I returned to my routine, already having one because I had been doing this for hours now... It was boring but it gave me a way to help out around here. I returned to unloading the net of fish, singing again.
'Well at least you're here with your friends so nothing can get you..' I told myself and smiled at my thoughts. But I didn't know someone was lurking in the shadows, watching me with a certain hatred in their eyes.
