Chapter 39

Laurens's POV

I felt like my world was going to fall apart right then and there. I turned to see Washington and Lafayette marching towards us. Washington looked angry and Laf looked worried. I quickly hid my pistol behind my back and glanced at Alexander. Alex kept his eyes to the ground and seemed to be trying to hide behind me.
"What is the meaning of this!" Washington growled, looking at Lee.
"Burr, get Lee to the medical tent. Lee you will never agree with me but trust me these two men do not speak for me." He said before Burr rushed off with Lee and the doctor. Washington told Alexander to go back to camp with him because they needed to talk and Lafayette just stood there staring at me. We stood in silence for a good 5 minutes.
"He started it didn't he? I'll tear him a new one." He growled in furry, looking at the direction Burr had taken Lee. I took a deep breath and pronounced,
"It was me. I challenged Charles." He stopped and looked at me.
"You...what? After I told you not to start any shit with him?!" He shouted. He came closer to me and my eyes stayed glued to the ground. I was shaking in fear, I was afraid of what the rest of his reaction was going to be. I waited for him to say something else but nothing came from him other than his irritated breaths as he huffed in anger. I slowly raised my head up to look at him. I didn't get a chance to see his face before I felt a powerful hand strike me across the cheek and I fell backwards. I touched my cheek and felt tears welding in his eyes. I looked up at him and saw his hand raised in a high position from just hitting me. Stifled and uncontrollable sobs broke from my chest, escaping through my throat. I never thought he'd strike me in all my life, I thought he had loved me too much to lift a finger against me. I didn't want to be babied by him, and I didn't want to be able to get away with things just because he loved me. I was ok with taking a scolding but this was a whole different level, I whole new level of hurt in my heart. When he pushed me, it wasn't that bad but this... I scrambled to my feet and ran past him to find Hercules so he would comfort me.

Lafayette's POV

I watched as Laurens scampered away and saw the pistol I gave him laying in the mud. I hadn't realized what i'd done because furry had blinded me.
