Laurens's POV

I hurried through the camp to my tent, wanting to be away from everyone, just wanting my friend by my side because I was heart broken. I never expected this to happen, my heart stung and so did my cheek. To make it worse, Lafayette would wear rings from the places he visited and I knew that I would have a welt on my face from his hand and those rings... I slipped inside the tent and found Hercules sitting on his cot, reading a book.
"Hey John, you ok-" he smiled then looked up at me but his smile quickly went away when he saw the tears streaming down my cheeks. I searched for the words to say but I choked as my mouth fumbled, the words catching in my sobs. He got up and came over to me, putting a hand on my shoulder.
"Let me see what's the matter..." he said and gently moved my hand that was holding my stinging cheek. I saw his eyes go wide and his jaw clenched.

Hercules's POV

'Lafayette.' I thought instantly, seeing the ring marks. Lafayette was the only soldier that wore rings that weren't wedding rings. I gritted my teeth. Laurens's face looked swollen but also bright red from the forming welt on his cheek. But I could also tell Lafayette did this because of the face that he had a heart broken look in his eyes, and he wouldn't have that look for anyone but him. I pulled him close and hugged him, brushing back his hair as I tried to comfort him. I felt him nuzzle into my chest, continuing to sob. He was like a frightened bird, shaking violently, and I wasn't going to let anyone treat him this way.
Lafayette was in for it now.
