they were just too alike. sassy and salty.
tsukishima believed that opposites attract. and they were way too simillar. he thought if they got together, they would just break up in the end.
sure, he did like her, but he didn't want to break her heart due to their similarities.
and anyway. let's face it. what are the chances of van liking him back?
a lot. just that he doesn't know.
yamaguchi, being the good friend (insert trademark sign here), was sick of it. how both of them were so salty towards each other, yet liked each other, and tsukishima not growing the balls of confessing.
"tsukki! just confess to her already!" yamaguchi whined for what seemed like the thousandth time to him as they practiced serving the balls over the net on a certain friday afternoon.
"she probably does't like me back," he answered, his face as stoic as always.
that was it. it was the last straw, as far as yamaguchi was concerned. he was making his friend confess one way or another.
an idea struck his mind. it was a long shot, and tsukishima was definitely going to kill him. but it was the only idea he could think of. so why not go for it?
he clutched his stomach, pretending to double over.
"tsukki, i need to use the bathroom," he said, looking at his friend's face for approval.
"you didn't need to ask me, yamaguchi, just go," tsukishima said, taking another volleyball from the cart.
hiding a triumphant grin, yamaguchu raced out of the gym and headed towards the music room, where van was practicing the harp with qq, kimberly, and the harp squad.
"van!" he exclaimed as he burst through the doors, causing the ensemble to fall into silence and their heads to turn, "quick! it's urgent! tsukishima needs you!"
"you're his friend, why is he asking me for help?" van said, her eyes beginning to scan the score in front of her.
"please! it's urgent!" yamaguchi said, faking a really good it's-an-emergency-involving-life-and-death tone.
"just go, salt," qq said, waving a hand at her friend.
van gave an inward sigh and stood up before heading towards the open door.
van entered the gym and atopped in her tracks. yamaguchi was missing and the entire team was staring at her. including a tsukishima that was looking more than fine.
"van? you need anything?" daichi asked as he walked over, "don't you have practice at the moment?"
"tsukishima said he needed me—my help," she said, quickly covering her screw-up, which no one noticed.
yamaguchi, tsukishima thought, mentally facepalming as he walked towards the girl.
"yes, i needed your help," he said, "but let's go outside first."
the two salty kids exited the gym as yamaguchi ducked behind a nearby tree just in time.
"so," van said, folding her arms, "what's wrong?"
"us," tsukishima said, "us is wrong."
van raised an eyebrow at him.
"we're too alike," he said, "and we can't be together, even though i really like you. nowadays, relationships are bound to last longer if the two have opposite personalities. we're too alike, and our relationship would break faster. i would upset you, and that's the last thing i want to do."
the air was pregnant with silence. only the slight rustling of leaves could be heard.
"tsukki, you've been 'upsetting' me since the day we met," she said, doing air quotation marks at the word 'upsetting', "but listen here. if you like me so much, you wouldn't hurt me, right?"
his eyes widened.
"so prove it to me," she said, "that you won't hurt me in our relationship, and we will last longer than you think we will."
silence again. he was too dumbfounded to speak, and van had no idea what she just said.
"so does that mean we're... you know?" tsukishima asked faintly.
"if you want it to be," she answered as a light pink came across her cheeks, "look, i have practice now, and it was great talking to you. bye."
she turned and headed down the hallway with quick footsteps so he wouldn't have a chamce of seeing her face reddening.
yamaguchi did a mental fist pump before emerging from the tree. and of course tsukishima noticed him.
as yamaguchi edged closer towards the blonde, tsukishima said, "you know that was not needed, right?"
