After school on Monday, I walk with Scott out to a bench near the parent pick up. I've already waited for Scott to change into his lacrosse gear and he won't tell me why we're sitting on this bench when he should be warming up for lacrosse practice and I should be attempting to do my homework.
"So what happened? You left me stranded at the party," Allison says, approaching Scott. At first, I wonder if she noticed I was here. Stiles and I went to her house to explain, after all, in a pretty unforgettable way.
"Yeah, I - I know, I know," Scott stammers, jumping up. "I'm really sorry. I am. But you're gonna have to trust that I had a really good reason."
"Did you get sick?" Allison asks, looking sideways at me. I hold my breath, waiting for Scott to denounce my and Stiles' excuse.
"I definitely had an attack of something," Scott says. I let out the breath I was holding in relief.
"Am I gonna get an explanation?" Allison sighs.
"Can you just find it in your heart to trust me on this one?" Scott asks.
"Am I gonna regret this?" Allison raises her eyebrows. Oh my god, they're flirting over the fact that he ditched her.
"Probably," Scott admits, raising his eyebrows too. "So is that 'yes' on a second chance?"
"Definitely yes," Allison says. A horn honks and Allison jumps back. "That's my dad. I better go."
She offers him a goodbye smile and Scott watches her walk a little before he turns back to me. I'm just about to say something when he turns back around suddenly and stares straight at Allison's dad. Mr. Argent smiles at him and Scott waves, dumbfounded. After they pull away, Scott looks around wildly.
"What's wrong?" I ask, standing up.
"Friday night? After I left the party, I was in the woods and - and -" he stops and looks at me.
"What? Scott, what is it?" I ask and step closer.
"I finally have a girlfriend and her dad shot me."
