I run down the stairs and go through the kitchen, retracing our earlier steps. The chairs that were in front of the cafeteria doors are now scattered around the room, on their sides and upside down. The doors are wide open, falling off their hinges.
I keep pushing one foot in front of the other and I sprint to the gym. I burst through the doors to find Scott writhing in pain on the floor.
"Scott?" I ask. I stop so suddenly that my hair flies out in front of me and my shoes squeak on the floor.
"Go!" Scott shouts without picking his head up. My eyebrows knit together in confusion.
"Scott, what are you -" I begin.
"Emerson, leave!" Scott growls.
"You're shifting!" I cry stupidly in surprise. I look up towards the Alpha just watching from the other side of the gym. "Why?" I yell towards the beast. "What do you want?"
My brother's head flies up and he looks at me. His eyes glow gold and he bares his teeth. A low snarl comes from his throat. "I want to kill you."
"Scott ..." I say slowly. I start to back away, my steps getting quicker and quicker. My shoulder slams into the door frame, but I just stumble to the side. As soon as I'm in the hallway, I turn and bolt. I can hear one set of footsteps running after me. I'm too afraid to look and see which werewolf it is. I make a left at the end of the hallway and, to my surprise, Scott runs right past me.
I know where he's going.
To the chemistry lab.
"Scott!" I shout, going after him. He disappears up the stairs and I stop. I can't run anymore. Even if the Alpha wanted to kill me and he was right behind me, I could not run another step. I double over. My side is in unbearable pain and my legs hurt. "Scott, stop! Stop it!"
I begin to walk as quickly as I can. It feels like I climb the stairs so slowly, but when I reach the top, I see that Scott is walking down the hallway. He's scraping his claws along the wall lightly, just enough that it sends chills down my spine, but not enough to leave marks.
He doesn't know I'm here. I barely breathe as I bend down and take off my squeaky shoes. I ditch them next to the stairs and sneak after him in my socks. Something in his hand shines when it hits the light. After a moment, I realize that it's a key. He found the janitor's body and took the keys.
I watch, terrified, as he puts the key into the lock of the chemistry lab door.
"No, Scott. No," I whisper. I reach out and put my hand on his shoulder. I can see his claws extended and his glowing eyes, but when he turns and looks at me, his eyes are back to normal.
"Go inside." Scott twists the key and I notice that his claws are still out.
"Okay," I murmur. I push open the door and step inside. Scott closes the door loudly behind me and I hear the sound of metal snapping.
"Scott!" Allison yells, rushing to the door. She tries the door handle and yells my brother's name again as Stiles hurries over to me. He pulls me into a hug.
"Where's he going?" Lydia wonders out loud.
I bury my face into Stiles' shirt as Allison keeps yelling my brother's name.
"Stop," Lydia says suddenly. I look up. "Stop! Do you hear that?"
I listen for a minute. I don't hear anything.
"Listen," Lydia insists.
Then, I hear the faint sirens. They get louder and louder and soon, I can see the flashing lights on the walls of the school. The five of us go to the window and stick our heads out. Cops cars flood the parking lot.
