The next morning in World History, I watched as Scott bounced in his seat just as nervously as I had the night before. Our teacher was handing back tests and Scott's eyes were firmly glued on him.
I didn't know that Scott had been so worried about this test. He seemed so anxious, I wonder how I'd missed it.
I start watching the teacher too, suddenly curious about what I go on it. I hadn't tried too hard outside of the hour time frame I'd actually taken it in. I didn't seem so important to study for History tests when your brother was a werewolf and you were getting freaky supernatural visions all while you were worrying about who the Alpha werewolf was and who he was going to bite next.
Stiles taps Scott's shoulder.
"If Derek isn't the Alpha, if he's not the one that bit you, then who did?" Stiles asks him. Scott shakes his pencil.
"I don't know," he whispers in reply, shrugging his shoulders. My mind wanders from what I got on the test to who the Alpha is. Is it someone we know? It must be - or at least, someone who has a connection to us - or else why pick Scott? Stiles sinks back in his seat before shooting forward again.
"Did the Alpha kill the bus driver?"
"I don't know," Scott shakes his head again.
Stiles leans back in his seat and sighs, frustrated. I can practically see the questions swimming behind his brown eyes.
"Does Allison's dad know about the Alpha?" Stiles says quickly.
"I don't know!" Scott snaps, whipping around. The class turns to look at him and I bite my lip. Stiles scratches his neck awkwardly as the teacher hands him his test. My jaw almost hits the floor when I see Stiles' grade. He got an A. The rest of the class got low grades. How did Stiles do so good?
I watch as Scott's test lands on his desk. D minus. There's a note on the top that says it's unlike Scott and to see the teacher after class. I sigh, my jitters starting to kick in. I jump a little when my mine lands on my desk. I let out a huge sigh of relief. I got an A too. I turn around, showing Stiles my paper, trying to be subtle and not let Scott see. I've succeeded.
"Dude, you need to study more," Stiles tells Scott. My brother angrily flips the test over, leaving the graded side down. "That was a joke," Stiles says dully. "Scott, it's one test. You're gonna make it up. Do you want help studying?"
Stiles' eyes flicker to me. Scott sighs and shakes his head.
"No, I'm studying with Allison after school today," Scott tells him. I nod my head once, sharply. So there lies the problem.
"That's my boy!" Stiles exclaims proudly.
"We're just studying," Scott defends.
"Uh, no, you're not," Stiles smirks, crinkling his forehead.
"Seriously?" I complain, already seeing where this conversation is going.
Most times, it's great having guy best friends. Like when they don't obsessively talk about clothes or shopping, two topics I hate. Sometimes, it's terrible. Like when they want to obsessively talk about girls.
"No, I'm not?" Scott asks.
"Not if I'm forced to live vicariously through you," Stiles tells him. I groan, sinking into my seat. I wish this was Chemistry so that Stiles and Scott weren't allowed to talk. I silently will my best friend to shut up or even for a vision to take over. I don't want to hear Stiles talk about how he wants my brother to do more than study with Allison for him. "If you go to her house and squander that colossal opportunity, I - I swear to God, I will have you de-balled."
"Stiles!" I say loudly, turning around to stare at him with wide eyes. The class looks at our section of the room once more. Sometimes, I really hate the compulsive need to eavesdrop on every conversation ever.
"Okay," Scott hisses. "Just ... stop with the questions, man."
"Done," Stiles waves his hands through the air. "No more questions."
He shakes his head and he almost has me convinced.
"No more talk about the Alpha," he continues. "Or Derek. Especially Derek ... who still scares me."
